oh I see yes there's no range selection is there

does the 'func' button not switch between modes or something

sounds like it may be set to Mohm instead of Kohm and just chucking up the nominal minimal output

A meter is "auto-ranging" if if chooses the best scale to display.

It's the range that matters. No use if it goes to zero but only has 1 digit for the range you're interested in:

one kiloohm is a thousand ohms so 0.001 is one ohm on a kiloohm scale.

You can't measure resistance directly. Your meter will supply its own reference voltage & calculate it from the current. So it's important the only thing between your probes is the resistance you want to measure.

agreed if there's no manual range selection it should do it automatically

in the same vein though 0.001 Mohm is 1 kohm (the minimum if can show at that range) which could still be indicating it's seeing 0.8kohm and rounding up ?

that is, if it's manual and set to the 2Mohm range

I thought i would ask Screwfix if either i'm not doing it right, the machine is faulty or it is not designed to do what i want. The nice lady in the store offered to replace it or exchange it for something else. I opted for one of these https://www.screwfix...ector-kit/95426 which has the increments of ohms to choose from

I don't think she would have given me a straight refund so i now have two potentially usable multimeters (with the one coming from ebay). If they both look like they'll do the job i may return the Screwfix one back to them in a few days for a refund and keep the £9 ebay one. All good fun.

You can get multimeters for automotive use. Though there's a fair degree of overlap on basic functionality.

Your old meter is not accurate enough for coils as I said before.
The coil may be .3 to .9 ohms and will show .001 9n it which is reading 1 ohm. The accuracy is not there.
With your new one the 200 ohm scale will read directly in ohms so .8 or .5 will show as just that

this is correct ^ I misread your original post and thought you were trying to measure 0.8komhs  not 0.8ohms

apologies!  (well you'd already ordered a new one anyway so no drama)

that plug tester would come in handy as well check all your sockets for safety

Got the new multimeter(s) and they both had a resting continuity of 0.2 ohms. The new coil should be 0.8 and shows as 1.0 when measured so that works out. 1.0 - 0.2 = 0.8

I've also found that my original coil measures 1.5 ohms so it was worth getting the new coil to ideally match the 65D dizzy

Pleased to finally have a multimeter. I might find out why the hazards don't work now

Thank you
