not massive update, been doing hte engine at work int he mornings, painted the inlet manifolds grey, and did the sump plates. found that a 21214 niva oil pump is deeper than a 2103 one, also the dip stick is in a different place.

started looking at the boot floor today, and found that it had a strange rot to it. It was rotten right above the exhaust but it didnt seem right. so i started prodding and i never knew that int eh boot floor there is a sandwich of plates with asbestos in between!!

i have been doing bits as i say to the engine at work, new standard oil pump, sump is done, bought a crankshaft sensor, and a few other bits. found the water temp sensor for the ecu hits the carbs, so will have to do something else.

1000005480.jpg

the carbs are early ones, they have the 7mm shaft, but i need to make a tps adapter for them, not sure exactly what to do as of yet

1000005481.jpg

so the car today

small update, its been too hot to do anything ont eh car really. but i did a few bits to the engine in work. I am working on a tps set up, but havnt taken any pics as of yet. I had a problem though, the Niva temp sensor for the ecu hit the dcoe inlet. I just bought a boss, and had it laser welded at work

thanks!!! i have a mini also indoors, that is being done too but as a side project, if i cant do the Lada ill do the  mini or what ever else i can. Im in no rush at all with the mini, ill probably never drive it, and also i can get it as close to 100% mint as i can that way.

The Lada today, i welded up the front of the floor pan, then i added a patch to the inner wing type area. Then when i looked at the floor, i saw it was too material for the height of floor wanted. as in, i had to cut it and remove some from the weld.

1000005787.jpg

where this is tacked on in places and painted, its not finished, its just being protected as itll be at least a week until im back on it

1000005788.jpg

here is a pic of yesterdays repair, and the wheel arch area i didnt show yeasterday

1000005789.jpg

1000005790.jpg

plan is to weld it all then go back and make it look better.

Ive ordered a few more new thing for it, new wiring loom, i wasnt going to but for £20 for the rear forward, and £80 for the engine back with the fuse box, i cant resist really.

here is the tps addapter done almost [just bolts etc to do] i used a m7 tube nut, i cut it down, drilled it partly 6.8mm and tapped it m8. then i put a m8 bolt into it cut it down and put a flat on it to index into the tps. I then made a bracket to locate it

few little bits done for the lada. Bought a new wiring loom, light lenses and a load of other little bits. Now i put this pic on facebook, and Wayne Scofield

noticed straight away the size of the trumpets. they are for 45s not 40s!! so thats more money i didnt know i had to spend lol

1000005996.jpg

Also the top bolts int eh carbs where all rounded/where not threaded , so i drilled them all out and helicoiled them

1000005983.jpg

I was at tatton park and the guy i bought the lada from was there. i asked him about the original steering wheel, he said he had it and would swap for the one on the car, a fiat one. So next day i took the wheel off, and went. i went in my rally car because my road car was at work and i need to put milage on the rally car.

I got there, and he was looking for the wheel for maybe 2 hours, but int hat time he found loads of other part. OMG like new pistons, rods, brake master slaves, clutch, bushes bearings, you name it. so i parted with a donation to him and filled the rally car!

 1000006028.jpg

It dosnt look much in that pic but it is!

I got these!

1000006021.jpg

I love the look of them, very Russian kinda simple way to crack a nut. But aparently they are hard to tune, and i have the 40s too...

Oh the 40s, he had the right trumpets too!

1000006027.jpg

today i trial fitted the doors, sill, and parts, stripped it back adn welded the mid sill in and its support

not a lot more but some! I spent part of the day sorting the rear brakes out on my rally car. It seems if you use strong wheel acid ont eh wheels, it gets on the calipers, takes all the copper slip off, and the pads seize if you dont use it often. Anyway!

that plates took ages to make, it has a double curve in it on the lip, and it was hard to get in to try it too. Used a cardboard template first

so when buying the lada, i found in its history a guy who si in teh Uk, and is in camberage. I messaged him on facebook adn it turns out he is still selling lada parts and i had seem tehm on facebook before. I was looking at osme stuff he had for sale, and i saw some ultra rare suide repeater parts, and also the chrome that goes with it. 100% made up as it was not a lot of money at all!

1000006441.jpg?t=1759265232

i have started to stip the engine bay more as i want the engine out soon and the box too. The car will be put on its side to have the floor sorted

1000006473.jpg?t=1759265232

i started on the quarter panel too, tec screwed it on, and then welded it mostly on too.

1000006454.jpg?t=1759265232

1000006455.jpg?t=1759265232

not nice here, had to cut and weld it some

the last update is i ve decided the dcoe maybe ok, but to tune it and know how to sort it isnt me. So i have looked as a standard type down draft carb, but it is quite expencive mod for me as i dont have the parts, new the inlet from lada power is £100, plus carb and parts. Then i had the thought that, i have the bmw rally car, it runs megasquirt and a bosch ignition amp, and etc etc, so why not have the 2 cars simular so i can test parts on each other. As in, like when i had the R100 it just seems the right thing to do. So i am going to order a set of cherryberg 40mm twin throttle bodies, and probably use a microsquirt ecu. I am really looking forward to wiring this up.

i also found the engine bay wiring was either a fire or a call to the aa at best. I can run a lot of things from the microsquirt too, liek the rad fan, fuel system, etc. Ill use the same parts i have on the Bmw, 100% chinese fuel line fittings etc too.

updates soon!

Hi Avtovaz,

Love the build even more so the very expensive boot support  :D  :D

Paddy

thats actually kerion wood, it is really expensive for wood as its proper hard stuff! We use it at work on the tippers ! ;)))

So, ive been off work with a cold, its not a nice one, its caught me out now for 2 weeks. But being at home and time not to work on the car, but able to think is a dangerous thing. I do OVER think a lot of thing. Im looking at the 1700 engine, its all new, but its not on peek of its power by any means, but its cammed , its standard valves, got some nice bits, but im thinking what will it really be like? Itll do say 100 -120 bhp at the flywheel. Again thinking, i want this car to be able to drive to Hungry do 70 mph all the way there, and back and not care about it as itll be reliable. Power isnt the main issue, its reliability. So with the Lada 5 speed, how good is this combination?

So here the ford pinto engine is everywhere, and i got thinking, its heavy but reliable, goes on a  type 9 box, will drive to the moon and back. So i started researching them, and ok yes they are cheap , but the type 9 is dear now. You can use a rx8 box with an adapter but its getting complex quick as there is too many unknowns.

I had a c20xe in a lada years ago. click here for a vid it was with a type 9 with a proper bellhousing, it had a tran x straight cut box, and a 4.4 lsd, it was mega. But the car rotted quick and i had it on the road for maybe 6 month. So i looked for an xe, mega money as they are so good. So i looked for a cav sri 130 8 valve type engine, rare as anything.  COuld use a carton box but expensive and rare too.

So all of these are with the type 9 box, they are dear and old.

What is new that will fit? what is rwd already? What will convert? Duratec, had one for my bmw and it was low mileage and worn so full rebuild would have to be done but goes on a mx5 box. Zetec, getting old and again on a conversion to a rx8 box and needs lots of water way stuff buying, not ideal. K series, love them to bits, ideal, had one in the R100, was 130bhp, was amazing, too much hastle to make a sump, etc etc...

Then, back some time ago, i had looked at early mazda mx5 nb engines, but they had a water way on the back of the head, some stupid vvt oil way on it, and just didnt seem right.

But hold on, the mx5 engine and box is 16kg lighter than the Lada engine and box, is 140 bhp out of the box, its on a rwd gearbox already, sumo is ally and on the back, so no good. So i asked chat gtp, Someone on retrorides is fitting one ! But they had cut the bulkhead and made the car dangerously low. But they had a sump from another mazda, it was steel. Hmm that works, ok so how much are they? Oh here is one on ebay, engine 1800nb vvt, with box, 90,000 miles, starter, alti, wiring loom, £385... so i offered £350 and went for it money as i was off...

1000006597.jpg?t=1760475203

1000006599.jpg?t=1760475203

you can see the oil way problems here and the water housing too

1000006602.jpg?t=1760475203

1000006601.jpg?t=1760475203

1000006604.jpg?t=1760475203

well turns out the oil pipes go to the vvt system, and its a strange ally housing for the 90 deg bend.

1000006612.jpg?t=1760475203

there is the pipes. 1000006613.jpg?t=1760475203

So into the block is 1/8npt, i want to mount a Lada oil pressure sender set up , so the warning sensor and the gauge sensor, so id want to remove it anyway and do my own thing. I ve ordered some an3 fittings to make my own set up, ill make an ally manifold for the Lada sensors, its not a big problem as the engine was so cheap. Sump i got from ali express, £13! but £30 delivery.

How hard can it be?

I have to say, Ladas when set up correctly handle on tarmac as good or better than the same spec escort, so this car should be amazing to drive. When i take it to car shows, itll be that little bit different. I do like engine swaps, ive had the lada with the c20xe and type 9, the bmw has a volvo b230 engine and a is200 6 speed box with microsquirt, the R100 metro had mgf 1800 engine with speeduino, so this lada with mx5 nb and microsquirt, will be good. Oh also, on twin 40 throttle bodies ;)

still love the amount of effort you've put in to the shell, nice cheeky upgrade with the engine as well as they're a good little motor and can offer so much tuning wise
