I actually found that i had a spare bolt that i had originally bought to replace a snapped top engine steady. ( i just happened to be looking through my spare parts box! )

It seems to be the same thread and length as the bolt for the water pump.

 

So i've added that now and it seems to have JUST enough clearance.  I think this is the same replacement for the water pump bolt from minispares and would usually require a spring washer, but in this case i left it out.

 

So i'm happy now it doesnt catch.

 

I also fitted the new "broken bolt" engine steady to the original side.  That was a pain, mainly because of moving the clutch breather and me forgetting how small your hands have to be to get back to the bulkhead and mount the steady bar.

Like others said, the repair plate is really good. And now basically zero mm engine movement.

Sorry I haven't been on for a while so a bit late to this, but the water pump side steady you show usually has a countersunk head screw supplied with it for that position (and the bracket is countersunk accordingly) - I have one fitted

Classic Mini Adjustable Engine Steady Bar L/H Water Pump Kit inc Polyflex Bushes

 

This is an adjustable steady bar complete with fixing brackets and fittings, designed to bolt on the water pump keeping it neat and tidy, supplied with a counter sunk cap screw to enable it to be fitted to a MPI engine with the larger water pump pulley. (previous versions could not do this), there is not much out there to help you hold still a MPI engine due to the amount of equipment fitted at the back of the engine, this is why it was standard equipment on the ERA Turbo model to help with clearance. This bar will also help to move the top of the engine forward or backwards if required to help if you need the extra clearance. Comes supplied with Polyflex UK bushes in classic black or bright orange. Really only suitable for 1275cc models with no bypass hose or extra breathers.

 

 

The water pump side wouldn't control the engine well enough on its own, you have got and need one of the repair brackets for the clutch side.
