They can only have worn bigger, so it should be possible to push the lid into position, taking up the slack.

 

I'm resisting saying try without the seal because I've fitted a Mini boot seal 

Haha yes, the amount of times I've had to take this seal on and off now, and it never gets any easier!

If you have gaskets on all the parts of the hinge; it won't make a difference. 

 

Mine are very wobbly as well.

 

I think what might have happenned is when you pulled all the panels together to spot weld them, you might have pulled down the hinge part which would have twisted the bottom of it towards the front of the car, tilting it.

Yes I think you might be right with this, I did try my best to keep everything aligned at the time, but I have also come to a similar conclusion that something like this might have happened. I have also been looking back at old photos, and to be honest the boot always looked like it stuck out at the bottom, so I'm wondering if me trying to correct that my pushing on the hinge panel has made things worse..
