the nut used to adjust alternator belt tightness was missing and the bolt was about to fall out.

 

If that is the bolt into the lower ear of the alternator, those don't have a nut. The alternator has a thread.

Some of them have a buy it now option, makes me wonder if they do deals with car traders to raffle Minis they've got up for sale.

 

I'd assume they're subject to the same regulations as a trader - what amounts to a basic 6 month warranty on the car being roadwothy.

The inter web says that prizes / raffles do not have the same consumer rights as car sales, because you are buying a ticket and a chance, not the actual car itself.
So the winner has absolutely no chance of a recourse, and I would presume the raffle company T&Cs will cement this.

Probably not been tested but I don't buy the lottery excuse. They are selling tickets on the promise somebody will win a car.  If you're only paying a pound it's because you accept the chances of not winning, not because you accept you won't get what was promised if you do win.

Hi all again to be fair the car is lovely, the  body work is very good, engine is strong tyres are good breaks work well for a mini. managed to fit speakers so the stereo so that works now. starting to love it a little. And i feel lucky to have won it.

I would try asking the previous owner for a discount on the purchase price as compensation for repairs.

I think there's a risk of this getting a bit out of perspective 

 

if you pay a few quid for a ticket, and you get given a car, whatever that car is, you're still quids in aren't you?

 

I mean yeah if they bring a total shed with no working brakes and rotten out at every corner, maybe there's some grounds for complaint, but you're basically being given a free (ish) classic car, even if you paid normal money for one you'd be daft if you didn't expect to have to fork out for repairs almost straight away, that's just the nature of the beast
