Hi , I'm having an issue with my brakes
4 pot mini sport calipers
Pedal travel stops 2cm off the floor, brakes are operating but with out bite.
It's got newish pads & rotors.
I was reading on Mini sport website that there's a Cooper S specific master cylinder, same bore but taller by 15mm
With increased fluid capacity , so I assume (???) longer stroke meaning more "umph" in the system

Any advice to offer ?

Your assumption is incorrect. The volume is only there for pad wear in extreme situations. Like is says increased capacity. The stroke is the same.

 

so back to the problem. Poor pads? You don’t say. Poor rotors? you don’t say. Poor installation. No images.

 

But the calipers aren’t the best they do flex.

 

 

That's interesting, I was thinking about getting a set of the Minisport 4 pots, can you tell me how you measured the flex, the amount of movement and at what pressure it happened?

Ive also got a new pair of these calipers which ill be fitting to my project shortly.

Let’s just say another brake maker made calipers this way in the past and found that they flexed under braking. So the spit pins were removed and the calipers redesigned to use “bolts”. These provided the required strength to stop the flexing.

I've seen those from Mini Sport flex, never bothered to measure it. It was a chap who fitted them and complained of a spongy feel to the pedal. Thinking they needed more bleeding, he popped around, I couldn't get any air at all from these system, after isolating various sections of the system, we took the front wheels off and it was there to see, waste of time measuring anything. it was clear they are junk.

I wouldn't touch any minisport brake parts (or really any parts from them).

Ive just compared pictures of minisport and minispares alloy calipers and apart from the extra bleed nipple on the minispares ones they look the same.
Do the minispares ones flex too?
And what actually flexes? The mounting lugs?

I don't know what grade of alloys each are using. I've tried the Mini Spares Calipers and currently running KADs. Of all of them, I've found the Mini Spares ones flex the least and I'll be swapping back to them. It's the bridge joint (that's the part where the two halve come together) that flexes.

Thats actually quite bad!
If I hadn't had them in storage for 3 years Id consider sending them back if they are that bad but hey ho ☹️
Im surprised the KAD ones are flexing though.
Theres a lot to be said for cast iron! 😁

Lots of scaremongering going on here, fitted Minispares and Kad calipers in my last job, aswell as cheap gsl crap.

Feel any different to my Minisport calipers (again, actually had 5 sets now between 4 cars), erm.. no.

Tested with m1144s, green stuffs etc etc, all types of road use, traffic, hard braking on the twisties, relentlessly.

Would I get another set of Minisport calipers?, yes.
