That doesnt look very deep (might be photo angle though!), you could probably get the block skimmed down to get rid of it, unless its cracked as well ofc.

Also looks suspiciously file shaped :D

Mind you for all the hassle of that you might as well just chuck another engine in !

I also thought it was an odd shape, in an odd area! Never seen a head gasket cause such damage!

What does the head look like ? Would expect some serious scorch marks around where that happened !

Get it skimmed down, even if it requires a lot of skimming and just componsate with a custom head gasket or two standard ones together...

But for the same sort of cost, buy a 1275 metro engine and have that fitted. Any decent backstreet garage shouldnt charge that much to fit an engine, especially being a mini its hardly rocket science.

Ok guys I've just come back in from fiddling and the engine is now all out ( still on the subframe and with all driveshafts and things still on ) My next door neighbours son is quite handy with things so I offered him £50 to help me take engine out and put a new one back in.
Cheer for the offers on the engines guys it's much apprieciated.
@BrawlyRox if you are serious about giving me the engine then I would definatly be up for having it. Is it mechanically alright and everything?
Let me know as otherwise I will keep searching for a engine.
@big Adam Where abouts are you based?

definateyl engine f**ked im afraid. sorry i doubted the garage, have seen it before jsut not that bad before!! u must have had it blowing like that for some time, failing that there has been something else untoward to cause that much heat buildup as u said it got hot.

as long as the gearbox was ok a new block and head is on the cards. wouldnt chance using any of the old bits!! mite be easier to use a completely new lump. ever thought about a 1300 because this is your ideal time to change it.

I would love a 1300 for it if it's cheap enough because we had to pay the garage £80 already just to tell us it's buggered.
But if BrawlyRox is offering me a 998 one for nothing then I'd definatly go for that to save a bit.

Yeah the head is defiantly got a mark on it as well.
I don't think the garage would of done it though as they were advising me to get a new lump and fit it myself.

Just out of curiousity if I got a bigger engine like a 1275 would I have to get a bigger carb, exhaust manifolds and fuel pump to handle it. I currently have a 998
