drive shafts refitted + new CV boots all round, fuel tank sender rewired as there was about 4 bad joins on a small length of wire, tank area filled with waxoyl and dodgy spark plug removed resulting in stripped threads in the head
that's about it for this weekend work, 1 step forwards and 2 steps back

got a local engine place to fit a timesert into the head
but as the gasket set i ordered early last week is still in Exeter i couldn't refit my fixed head
so i painted anything that Phil didn't take for powder coating
also fixed the fire wall back in place in the engine bay

i then thought i would check my fan, good job i did as it's the smaller single point one
tried to fit my new hoover oil cooler tin today but couldn't work out how it was fitted, then worked out 1/2 the old one was still there

bell housing swapped and now the engine runs
just need to sort the wiring out now
who ever rewired bits of it didn't use VW colour codes
and then there's the small problem of the clutch peddle goes to the floor and doesn't operate the clutch
