Also, for the electrics, I know a good electrician that could sort that

i think the main problem is the intergalactic mileage my camper has done
i found the wear in these bits last time so had a go at doing something about it
all the bushes have been replaced from front to back again + the stop plate
i welded the wear on the pin (pictured above) up and using some emery paper and electric drill smoothed it out again
with the same emery paper smoothed the ball out and to take up the slack squashed the cup in the shift rod up a bit
putting everything back together (with new grease) was a struggle as everything is now a very tight fit
so far all 5 gears are there and in the right place and everything goes into gear with a very positive clunk
time for a test run tomorrow

Non-random gears eh? Sounds effieicnt. Or even efficient. How's it working now?
not sure yet need to do a test drive and maybe a tweak

things didn't go well
first flat battery
next i found i didn't have a socket big enough for the hub nut
after a bit of shopping and a larger socket set bought the hub nut still wouldn't come off
a trip to a work site and a scaffolding tube later the nut was off
next i snapped 2 fixing bolts (1 each side)
and finally after putting everything back together something is binding in one drum (gave up at this point)
the old ones stripped off
on both sides there was a bolt missing (snapped off) on the bottom fixing and while removing it i snapped off the other, so drilled out and retapped
new back plate on
and hub refitted + shoes
from the picture below you can see the whole outer rim of the back plates had rested away
