what complete and utter bull shine.

there is absolutely nothing 1963 about that car, it's a completely different shell to a 1963 model.

it's got internal door hinges which means the whole of the side panels are completely different.

that shell is 1969 at the very earliest.

They often detach number plates on cars for films.

Who does?

there's no license plate attached whatsoever!!

Are you sure? Now I could be wrong as I've only seen it once but I'm pretty sure you only ever see the front and side of the car in that sequence and in fact in the whole film. I don't remember where it is set, possibly LA where it was shot but in most US states there is no front licence plate required, only a rear one so you wouldn't ever see one on the front anyway.

I can't believe that someone actually bought a car out of a movie anyway, I never would! Traditionally cars from films and commercials are destroyed at the end of production as you can't be sure they are safe after shooting. Not once I've finished with them anyway.....

Yeah, you're right... no rear side view of the car. Sorry...

But to say that car is a 1963 car? Hmm...

Just a thought. Its obviously a slightly modified post 1997 MPi, but how about the thought that its been ringed with an early V5 in order to export it to America? Seems to be a fairly common thing, as when I was selling my Cooper I had 3 or 4 very generous offers from America, including being sent the V5 for an early car, then simply changing the plates and ID over so it could be exported. The car stayed in the UK anyway.

So yeah, thats what I reckon it is. And therefore in anyone's eyes over there it 'is' a 1963 Cooper...

(just noticed Dan had already pretty much said that, but never mind)

Well it might be just those shot in LA then, but I'm sure I've noticed it in a few films, mainly the more American big budget films. I suppose it helps them from becoming so dated?

when i was looking to buy a mini a few years ago after just arriving here from the states i had just about every dealer try and sell me a 90ish model. when i explained i had to have one that was over 25 years old they assured me it would be no problem getting it back in the states. after i discovered how this was being done i wanted nothing to do with them.

i do have a question though. say i wanted to report these dealers who would i need to call? would i need any kind of proof?

Proof would definitely be helpful. I guess it would be the DVLA you'd need to contact.
