I bought a stage 3 kit from minispeed and got the complete exhaust system, needle, k&n filter, stage two head, alloy inlet. £690. bloody great laugh. Now I am saving for the new SW5 2007 cam to get more out of it. I have had all that installed for the last year or so and have ragged the bejesus out of my 998. If you can spend the money go for it! money well spent in my opinion.

I was led to believe that a tuned 998 engine can be more fun than a 1275 as they are more revvy.
On top of that 1275's are getting rarer.
I've had a 998 with a Huddersfield Spares stage 1 kit and managed to keep up with 1275 Coopers no problem at all. I now have a MSPD 1293 block fitted and although I haven't driven the car for a while it was pretty good fun too !
When I did the Tower to Tower in 2003 there was another chap who had a tuned 998 and it went like stink...I posted the spec on Minifinity a few years back: http://www.minifinit...U...getit&lid=8

Theres many different opinions on this.........
many people say theres no replacement for displacement, meaning you WILL get more power from a 1275cc than a 998cc
the money you spend on a 998 will only make it as fast as a good condition 1275cc anyhow, so in my eyes your better off getting a 1275cc for £100 and doing all the business to that engine.
i do understand your reasoning behind the 998 as it is very low mileage and good condition, but id rather spend the money on making something thats already faster than a 998, even faster.
also you say the insurance will rocket with a 1275cc, but any engine that has had power improved by more than 10% will cause a serious increase in premium, regardless of size.
Your engine, your choice mate

Im also thinking of adding a stage 3 head and stage 1 kit to my 998 mini, again it has very low mileage. Im not willing to start taking engines out and messing about like that as i need this car back on the road as quick as possible for college and getting to work.
To my questions,
Is a 12G295 head just as good for bhp and torque as a stage 3 head?
And would a stage 3 head and stage one kit effect reliability?
Thanks
Craig

small bore racer is the way forward... do something abit different and keep it small and revvy!

People will tell you to do big block build as you will get mroe power for your money.
So what, do what YOU want.
I am planning my 998 build. I was going to be even more different and go for a 1098 build, but i can't get oversize pistons for it, so putting that idea to the back of the shed for now!
i already have a modifed 12g295 head, that i will be taking to slarkes to have checked over and new valves ect.
Also have tiwn HS2s
looking at the performance +.080 pistons on mini spares (hmm 1061cc) and maybe a crank wedge too!
List also includes:
lightened flywheel
nice cam (undecided on sw5-07 sw10 or something really silly like a 286 scatter)
i want my mini to be fun. it doesnt need to be stupidly quick, as it will handle so sweetly. and with the increase in speed cameres ect, theres not point in goign too fast nowadays!

998's are BRILLIANT
Masses of high revving action.

By high revving you mean 6000RPM? I've only ever had a mini, so i assume that's high?

My 998 is completely standard but is low mileage and very good condition and it's pretty nippy by itself! Tremendous fun of course and my plans for it are simple:
Stage One kit
HIF 38
Good regular maintenance.

stick with the 998, as some one said above. Lots more revvy action. There is a 1040 for sale on morspeed ( me wanty) which they say is putting out over 100bhp on their dyno and still revving at 9000rpm. and i don't think morspeed have any reason to lie. So stick with the small bores. much better.
