Just came back to the car after it had been parked for about 20mins following a 10min drive to find a pool of water on the road below. Upon further investigation it was coming from around the water pump area but seemed to be a small perished pipe above so I have ordered a water pump bypass hose from ebay and am going to give it a go.

Let’s hope that does the trick.

If it's got one of the concertina ones fitted, they don't last 2 minutes. The bypass hose is a pain to fit too! It could also be the radiator itself which has sprung a leak. Also check if your rad cap fits properly and that the radiator has the overflow pipe correctly fitted.

The bypass hose. I'm so glad I'm getting rid of that.

To do the job proper you'll need to pop the head off the car and stick a new bypass on. That is If its the part thats gone tit's up .

You can replace the bypass hose with the head in situ. The 'best' solution is to use a solid piece of tube but, as he's already bought the replacement, I didn't see much point in telling him he's wasted his money! Plus, not everyone has the tools/ability to start whipping the head off.

Take off the water pump, not the head. Use some solid heater hose rather than the awful concertina easy-fit and you'll need a new water pump gasket.

definately, use the solid rubber ones rather than those silly concertiina hoses...

a bit of a bummer to do, but well worth the effort. last one i did last weekend took me about an hour to do...

definately dont use one of those concertina ones. if you've already bought one, keep it in the car for emergencies, and get a proper one, seriously...

Regards, good luck, and give us a shout if you come unstuck, especially with finding a solid rubber one. i know where they're really cheap...

Regards

Tom

Hi All

Remove the radiator, take out the pump and replace it along with the hose (Not the convoluted one)

also get 2 new bypass hose clips not jubilees.

Not worth risking having to do it twice or overheating while out on a run.

Castro11

Ps you could also check belt while its removed.

Cheers Guys.

I'd like to know where I could get the solid hose from.. As the concertina pipe failed on me while at riv! :genius: Fixed it with another concertina hose but it was a *Female doggy* of a job! >_<
(some detailed instructions wouldn't go amiss either :D but I managed ok at riv.. so taking the water pump off shouldn't scare me now! )

Any local mini specialist should do it...

my local mini place does them for £1. if anyone has real trouble trying to find them, i'll go and get a job lot of them, and send them to whoever, for cost (£1 +postage) if it helps...

Having been there myself now, i hate to see people struggle with concertina bypass hoses. they're complete pants...

i've now got a spare one in the car. i worked on the fact that it's gonna take me hour and a half to do, or an hour for the recovery people to turn up. i might aswell jsut b there the extra half hour :teehee:

Regards

any decent hose of the right internal diameter will do aslong as it is cut to length

ive seen a mini in one of the magazines that utilized simple garden hose, so if you can find one of those im sure it will do the trick

its not too hard a job if you whip the pump off, definately wise to use a proper bit if hose than a concertina one though.
