lemming... have you got a haynes manual because the electrical section is a good bedtime read and will help you understand a bit about how all the electrics work, or don't work, in a mini. the circuit diags can be a ball ache to understand but do make sense once read for about ten minutes or so...
you will be better off getting a cheap multimeter as these will tell you what voltage is travelling down the wire. the problems with mini's is mostly rust giving you bad earths or bad connections. you will need to check all your fuses and i would say check all the connections on each terminal or bullet connector...
invest in some emery cloth as well so that you can clean up the terminals you are checking.
All in all if the problem is still there then you are going to be checking wires to and from your headunit, or what ever else that doesn't work.
As dan has said most head units require two live connections, one that is permanent, to keep all your station presets and clock etc, and one that will come from a switched source (one that comes live when you turn the ignition on. One wire is normally red and the other is normally Yellow i think (someone else to confirm please). Turn your ignition on and then check both of these with your "pointy thingy". At least then you will have a starting point as to which supply you are missing
Long post, hope it helps!
