Pick up a 1275 from a metro for peanuts, budgeting for a rebuild, this way you can get a cheap motor in the first place, but end up with something you know is completely sound

unless you know the history of an engine, i would not recomend sticking it in without at least checking it over internally.

therefore get a cheap motor, even if its a bit iffy or done loadsa miles, it will be ok once you've rebuilt it

I like my 1400 stage 3, but from my youth, there was nothing wrong with the old 1098 units !

Okie so metro 1275 sounds like a winner,

Im assuming the metro engine is still an A series Engine?

Again thanks for all the advice.

Cheers

If you can find one, an MG Metro 1275 would be good, with a stage 1 kit... you'll be looking at around 70bhp, and it'll one of the best "out of the box" engines for the Mini.

i would go for the 1275! had a 998 only about a month ago in my car and now i have
a 1275 wouldn't go back to the 998 but a mini's fun no matter what.

yer the 998's like to rev higher than the 1275, must be the shorter stroke where as the 1275
has a longer stroke. i think :dozing:

when fitting a metro engine in a mini does the front sub frame need any adjustments??

yeh standard mini mounts will fit, and your metro should then fit straight onto your subframe, some small things that will need changing could be wiring electronic ignition (standard on metro's) uprated radiator and neccessary hose etc

I still don't understand this romanticizing of the 998. When i had one, it was an absolute nightmare going up a hill. I'd have to get a bloody good run up just to stand half a chance of not just coming to a stop mid way!
