I can hit 100 in my 27year old 998 with a Stage 1 kit and a SW5 cam. Ok its not fast but the speed limit is meant to be 70 so what does it matter how fast I can go over that :( Doesn't take me to long to go 0-60 either although most will probably say a 1275 can do it faster (which is most likely can) There is just something about a well tuned 998.

It only got 27BHP on the rollers tho. Was with only two cylinders working properly tho as my exhaust valve's had gone on two of them.

If a 998 is tuned right its just as good as any 1275. Im sticking with a 998 anyway, just prefer them.

998 - had 3 cars experience with this engine...all standard except for georges carb upgrade. All used bugger all fuel, run quietly...just do the job.

1275 - bit of an animal. Climbs things 998cc only dreams of. Bit more overtaking oomph. Bout all I can say lol.

Surely got to be more 1275's out there what with all those dead metros and Monty's 'n maestros to rob bits off.

Naturally the 1275 is going to offer more oomph and more cheaply as it's got more to start with.

A 998 small block can perform very nicely and offer better economy depending on the final drive ratio.

1098's are beasts now & only stroked 998's really, I had one in a clubby once pulled solidly but it was all over by 70mph - just like a 998 with a higher gear.

Ive just gone to a 1275 from 998.

Very noticable difference.

998 would rev easier I think.

1275 is alot torqier, and can reach todays road speeds alot easier, where as I found the 998 having to work alot harder to reach 60 or 70.

by the sounds of things a 1275 just sounds like a much easier drive!!!

have you got a straight 1275 or have you upgraded it any?
how did you source your engine?

Mines a totally standard 1275.

Its a A+ motor out of a 50,000 mile Metro.

I bought a whole car and took the engine from it, sold a few parts and had the rest squashed and scrapped.

If your any good with a set of spanners Id recommend this way as people tend to want so much more for an engine just cause its been taken out the car!

Plus you can hear it running and drive it to make sure its ok if you buy the car!
