Just tryed another quote with me as name driver on my mums policy and it came out at £700 fully comp! Thats half the price of the quotes i'v been getting! also i can pay monthly at 16% intrest which is really low too its usually around 30%

thanks Lund!

Sounds good and I've heard that with some companies, you still gain NCB even though you're just a named driver?

if LV is how i remember it

after 8pm there website gives u a generalised quote, normally way over the top.

Through working hours, it gives u an exact quote, normally £300 ish cheaper then the previous.

I used to insure with them.

Can't stress how good I've found footman James to be. They insured on my 30 (998) on a classic policy after a year of driving for about £600 TpFT and now they're insuring me on the sprite (1275) on a modern policy (because its M reg) fully comp for just over 800 after only a yr and half of driving. Phone them up and explain your needs and I'm sure they'll give you a good quote. Only downside is they wont insure you till after you've passed your test. Hence I wasn't with them for my first year because I was learning in the mini for the first 2 months of it. Rac gave me a pretty good quote for that year aswell.

Oh and don't know if you need to declare minilites seeing as they came as an extra but thats up to you.

Only thing about going on your mum's policy is that you won't build up your own no claims discount and so you will find it hard to get good quotes in the future

Ive payed £1000 for insurance with direct line for my 998 city e, but that has a non-standard front grille, wich put it up a bit, but they still insured me. They were very helpful, and uinlike most, would quote me before i was 17.

You do have to declare alloy wheels even if they are offered as an optional extra from the factory. If it's not standard you have to declare it!

Both of my cars (2004 Fiesta and 1986 Mini) have got alloys which were fitted by me but both were standard optional extra wheels - for both the only addition to the premium was the admin fee. So at renewal they will should not cost any extra.

to be honest the price of the car you have been offered seems steep to me, I got a perfectly good (if a little tatty looking) 1986 Mayfair with MOT and tax for £400 off eBay. For £1400 you should be expecting a sound early 90s mini with disc brakes! I would be anyway.

Young blokes do get it tough on insurance but best to get yourself insured, brave the first expensive year, and you will reap the benefits when your NCB comes round :dozing:

Never paid more than £800 for insurance myself... At the moment I have the 3 year old Fiesta £570 fully comp and the Mini £230 TPFT with agreed value

Thing is with direct line they said they dont allow any mods until your 25, and alloys are classed as mods.

Also the thing with me on my mums insurance is that LV have a strict policy on who is the main driver (which for the £700 quote was my mum) so they say that if i'm found to be the main driver they wont pay out. So i cant really run that risk since i am quite blatantly the main driver considering my mum is a 40 year old childminder with a zafira!

Still £1200 with alloys is still by far the cheapest quote i'v had and i'll be building up my NCB

oh i was never considering driving without insurance. £1400 seems around average for a mint condition 80's mini on ebay at the moment?

Yes. But standard parts from the manufacturer are cheaper then fitting aftermarket parts.

Example

Fitting 16" Ford alloys to my mondeo with 14" steels = no raise in premium due to alloys been made by ford. factory fit replacement.

Fitting 18" multispoke after markets to it = £50 raise in premium, after market modification.

Yes, they need to be declared. But good insurance companies will recognize this.

I hear Quinn Direct are good for young drivers!

Anyone you would suggest?

Liverpool Victoria, bet they beat any quote you find :dozing:

Link

I'm with them now and have been for the past 2 years. I wouldn't recommend them at all, in fact I'm never going with them again to be honest.

The phone lines are a jungle and 1 out of every 10 reps are helpful. Car got smashed in to in January, it was fixed.. 3 weeks ago.

Rubbish company. Rather pay more for better service.

Yea lol I wasn't saying you would go uninsured just meant better to get your own policy than have yourself as a named driver on your mum's for instance.

My mini isn't mint, has a few bullet holes, but goes perfectly well and like I say it was £400 (well alright, £411 :dozing: )

If you go for a post-84 mini (I think) they have front disc brakes as standard - makes a huge difference. Or does the one you've been offered have them added?

I paid £500 for my 1984 Mayfair - 11months MOT and 5months Tax (bought last september). Needed abit of work, but no body work as been required. It had new panels, and a respray before i bought it. So bargins can be found.

give NFU a call tomorrow - 0800 316 4661

i'm 17 - drive a 1988 jet black 998cc - the sorted me out - got a choice of either £770 for 3rd party, fire and theft or £1000 full comp.

as for modifications, the guy i spoke to said i should fax them a list of what i've got planned, but apparently it wont make much difference.

that quote for £1700 is insane - to put it in contextt i asked nfu about another car as a stand in while my mini's being sorted (long story), asked about a daihatsu charade gti (expecting to be laughed at). he just filled in the details and came up with £1400.
