(one of two reason I know these heads produce torque as well as power in comparison to the KAD's)

John

Mine makes more torque than yours John with milder cams hehe

very interesting to see all this, im thinking about 16ving the rally car with a K-series head (depending on the championship regulations of course) but obviously im going to need reliability for that kinda thing do the K1100's offer good reliability, its a very broad question with alot of variables i guess but the bore size is 1330 and already got a strong bottom end with JKD dogbox
iv seen on the KAD website in the vid section of a KAD headed rally mini did well till the diff died

 ill stop invading your project now lol

I wonder what the real reason was why no one fitted a KAD 16 valver with forced induction before 2007, Ive seen the head chambers and they are huge!!

Carl is your engine sporting a nice new set of Rover MJY100460 injectors per chance??

thats the one Sprocket is referring to, FastCarls KAD turbo. Regards reliability of the K head, think of it like this - there is a proven head gasket design available from myself (Specialist Components) the deck thickness on 1275 A+ blocks is adequate for the re-drilling for the new placed cylinder head studs. The head is held down by 10 equi-placed cylinder head studs (non of this bent over - hope it doesn't snap KAD stylee!!!) the water flow pattern of the K head is very similar to the original A head (the large area alloy heads coolers more efficiently than the cast iron 5 port), the drive system is proven. So thats the "conversion" bit covered. As regards the heads themselves, I've stripped and inspected many of these heads - unless there is over rev damage to a valve or an exhaust stud which needs heli coling the only parts I likely need to replace are the stem seals (not including replacing cam buckets to re-set cam clearances after valve cutting etc). I've had 150k mile despatch bike heads which have looked like scrap externally - with no wear to the vitals like valve seats, cams, valves, guides. So there is no dispute as to the strength and quality of the top end. Now what happens under the head gasket is the bit which needs to be made strong enough for the purpose it is intended for. Its no good putting one of my Sprint head/Cam combos on a ratty mg bottom end then complaining when it puts a rod through the block at 9500rpm! - I'm sure you see what I mean. So as long as the engine and gearbox are built for the purpose it will perform as required!

hope this helps

John

PROGRESS FINALLY!!!! after this had dropped to page 10!

Yesterday stripped the head completly

Bits that need to be welded into the head.
Posted Image

Damage to the head(which is the reason the engine was for sale in the first place)
Posted Image

Oil drain welded in place. Die grinder was used to remove material to allow the inner diameter of the drain to be at the same level as the oil gallery in the head.
Posted Image

Oil returns welded up
Posted Image

Belt drive conversion part welded in (or whatever you wish to call it)
Posted Image

Damaged part repaired, just need to drill and tap for the bolt, but need the new end plate first to locate the hole

Local engineering firm has shut down so need to find another one to do the skimming.

And work has agreed my overtime so should get the money at the end of the month so can get the bottom end ordered :)

Contacted another engineering firm re the skimming, just need to take it to them which is a slight problem due to them not being open over the weekend and my work during the week, may just take a day/half day off

Due to a change of plans I'm probably not be building my K headed engine after all. So the head in the condition above complete with valves, RS cams, rocker cover, RS throttle bodies etc might be up for sale soon. Along with a standard bore A+ 1275 block and caps and probably A+ rods also.

Will know what I'm doing after Saturday so there may be a for sale advert soon

I have been tempted to go 16k route, just haven't found proper head (for suitable price and probably never will.. lol). This has been interesting reading so far :D

Soooo... the big question is: What's the new plan then? :)
