Oops! It's the block that's shorter, not the rods - the rods are indeed longer (5.875" for the 970 S and 5.75" for every other A series rod). According to Vizard, the S blocks were all machined from the same casting though - they just lopped a bit more off the top for the 970 (and 1071) blocks.

This is another misconseption. Your statement is somewhat true though.


The 1071s block was the first of the big bore engines, therefore it is actualy the 1275 block that has extra metal on top. The 970 block is the same as the 1071 block

like to see someone get hold of some 970 rods! theres prob about 3 left in the world, ehehhe.

And yer, pretty pedantic, what if they realised they had enough room without changing the cast? so they were lopping more metal off for the 1071's than to th 1275's? lol.
