I understand that, but i was referring to people in a similar situation to me (drives a Mini, 19 years old, no NCB, first car, etc.) so that i could see whether i was doing anything wrong when getting quotes, or whether my quotes were the norm for the above spec. In other words, i was asking for actual quotes people have had. I'm sorry if i annoyed you by creating another thread, but i tend to be rather thorough when looking for information about something, and ask for specifics if i'm able to.

By asking about quotes, i was wondering whether i would be able to afford to buy the car and insurance, as well as run it, all for about £2800 (whilst still having a car that i love to drive every day and doesn't drive like a big, slow, unresponsive saloon).

I believe it's always better to phone insurance companies than get a quote online as you are speaking to them directly therefore the quote can't make assumptions.
I also think there are few members on here that are under 25 but insured with Footman James but this can only be done over the telephone and not on their website.

If you search "The Insurance Thread" in the search option on here then there is a fairly recent thread with some recommendations on it.

There is also a thread in the FAQ section which has pages of peoples insurance quotes.

I reckon (although never having driven one) a 998 will still be pretty nippy and definatly still fun to drive, with a Mini it's all about cornering not straight line speed. I'm sure a 998 won't drive like a big, slow, unresponsive saloon. Minis are very light cars but low to the ground so it's like a go-kart with three extra seats and a boot.

Thanks. I know the Mini isn't exactly fast, but, having never driven one, i was wondering whether it was a good exhilarating drive with a nice revvy engine note (as opposed to a boring monotone 'hum' like a low-revving, high torque engine). However, judging by what you said Mini_Magic and PinkGirly they are really fun to drive, and don't feel 'slow' at all. Ta!

Best thing to do is go to confused.com, moneysupermarket.com or comparethemarket.com, like 99% of other people do. We can't give you quotes on the forum, and most insurers who we'd recommend are on those comparison sites anyway.

When you're 21 quotes will go down dramatically. I'm 21 with no NCB and paying 440 fully comp on a 998 C reg.

A 998 should touch 90 and get to 60 with total ease. The difference between a Mini 'n many other cars is that it will stay at 60 regardless of how twisty the road is for far longer.

Actually I'm just kidding, we all rave about a car that's knocking on for 50 'because we love rust :!:

Direct Line are fairly reasonable but if you have an accident they'll more than likely end up quoting "book" value for the car rather than the true value. If you're ringing up people for quotes ask them if it's an "agreed valuation" policy or not.

Thanks! Didn't know that quotes could get that low!

Also, what exactly is the '998'? Is it just any Mini with the 998cc engine, with 40hp? This is why i presumed that the ones with less power are slower, my mum's old Punto 55 was decent enough, sounded great when it was revved, and was quite speedy around town (though definitely not nippy - it felt like it was as big and heavy as an old Cadillac!). This had 55hp, and is what i'm basing my expectations of the Mini on.

I just wanted this clearing up, as i knew there were Austin Sevens and Morris Mini Minors, then the Coopers, then the Clubman, Rover, etc., but can't find a simple history to tell me what the 998 was. Thanks again for all the help.

Yes it's 998cc but I don't know the power figures. A Punto weights about 1100kg whereas a Mini weights about 700kg so the Mini will be quite a bit more responsive and nippy, even if it has a bit less power than the Punto. If you're after torque then yeah the Punto will definatly have the upper hand.

Footman James (don't insure < 25)

They do. You can insure minis on classic policys with them really cheaply. The conditions are that they're limited mileage, have to be over 15 years old and you have to have a full liecence
