Either that or it's earthing through something else.

Like brake lines.

As above, I would really check that you have another earth cable before driving it! If not you might have just been getting away with it up til now, you don't want electrical wires melting and setting your mini on fire, or equally as bad, your brake lines melting and causing your brakes to fail.

Do you have a set of jump leads? If so, maybe you could use one of these as a temporary earth lead - just make sure the extra cable is secured so it won't get in the way of anything that's going to move - use cable ties, etc. to hold it out of the way. I've seen control cables completely fried by driving with the earth strap broken (and if you can't get the heater out because of the roll cage, I'm sure you won't want to have to change the cables that sit above it!)
