Hey im thinking of buying this engine here

1275 over bored with 544 cam, double row timing chain, high volume oil pump, larger valves, intake ports enlarged. Motor #12g1279, Head #12g940, trans# 22g1832.

I was wondering what the engine is from and if it will fit in my 1975 Austin Mk3 Mini 1000cc?

And What will i have to modify if i want to put it in?

Could someone who knows about engine numbers give me some information and tell me if it will fit please

It's easy enough to fit a 1275 into a 1000 shell. Mine is a 1971 1000 and it's got a 1275 based engine in it.

I'm not sure about the engine numbers. There are a few things that do need to be changed when swapping from a 998 to a 1275, but there are loads of threads about them.

One thing you may need to be aware of is whether you have a rod or remote change gearbox in your shell. I'm not sure when they changed from the earlier remote type to rod type but have a feeling it's around 1974? Someone else will confirm that for me I hope.

Its got rubber suspension if that helps? This is the engine and gearbox that came with it HAHAHA. Whats the difference between rod and remote? And can you tell from this picture what it has?

And can you put a rod gearbox in a remote car?

That's a rod change gearbox. Remote change boxes have a long alloy casing that houses the gear lever. You can fit a rod change box into a remote shell, I've just done it, but it involves a couple of little mods, that's all.

Also, little mods are things like the radiator brackets are different from 998 to 1275, they heater valve layout may be different, but I think that's all interchangable, ummm, the basic engine and gearbox is essentially the same and will fit. You'll need to consider a change of exhaust, manifold, carb, inlet manifold......

As above, it'll all be A series... a 544 cam is as follows...

Application Fast Road - Rally
Power Band - 2500 - 7500
Cam Lift(mm) 7.99
Valve Lift(mm) 9.82
Duration 274 Deg
Timing 27/67 67/27
Full Lift 110 Deg
VC (mm) 0.40
LTDC 1.85mm

Not a massively agressive cam, but much better than std, also rather old.. which would tie up with the A series theme of the engine (not A+)

Do you know what it's overbored to? Could be anything from around 60-70 horses up? Should be a nice little engine really if it's in good condition. As GW said, the 544 is an oldish cam profile, you could swap that for better gains if you wanted to. But, it'll be a little better than a standard 1275 and certainly better than an old 998!

if it's been raced, then i'd be stripping it.. usually old race engines are pretty knackered as that's the reason they are not in the car anymore
