Is it possible to fit a COSMETIC set of external hinges to internally-hinged doors for those that just want the look? I haven't examined the external hinges really closely (my car has internals), but it seems as if you could mount the external hinge without the securing pin - that way, the two halves of the ext. hinge would break apart when the door is opened (the weight is still borne on the true internal hinge) and then would mate back up when closed, giving the appearance of the external hinge....

Yes? No?

Have a look at the way in which the door opens. The part of the hinge that goes on the door would move differently to the part that goes on the A-panel.

I totally agree... But what I'm talking about is removing the hinge pin, so that when the door opens the door-mounted half of the unit can swing away from the A-pillar mounted piece. Weight is still borne on the internal hinge, which is unmodified. The A-panel half never moves, and never has to bear any weight - it's simply cosmetic.

The external hinge looks to only be held together with a single pin, and logically the halves should return to their starting position when the door is closed (assuming of course that your internal hinges aren't loose or rusting, allowing the door to move vertically).

I don't think the door half of the hinge would move away from the A-panel half, I think it would move towards it and hit.

Hmmm... possibly. I'll have to see. Maybe filing down the leading edge of the door-side piece prior to painting would mitigate that... The door still opens primarily OUTWARDS, even on an internally-hinged door, but I see what you're saying. I guess the only way to check would be to try it.

The door travels over an internally hinged A panel, but on an externally hinged door the door
pivots and swings at the hinge point and doesn't swing over the a panels, but if you were to
shape the inner edge of the door mounted part of the hinge and the outer part of the A panel
mounted hinge part it may swing open.

If you get what I mean ;)
