Sorry, can't really help on this one - I'm not exactly what you could call an Apple "fan" (hell, I'm actually banned from certain Mac based websites....). ;D

I'll try to keep the Apple bashing to a minimum.

I know that Apple recently released a shed load of updates for Tiger (OS X 10.4xx), which contained so many patches, they might as well have sent it in a box of PolyFiller. I've heard one or two grumbles about problems with these, but nothing specific. I don't tend to spend much time on Apple product news.

Try these, they might help sort something:

http://www.versiontr...fo/macosx/28507

http://www.versiontr...fo/macosx/12591

Some have said they helped sort out "slow internet" problems, your millage may vary.... :P

The only other bit of advice I can give, is that I know there was some issues with the DNS settings under Tiger a little while ago, and a common fix to the slow internet connection was to change to a level 3 DNS server, rather than the one used by your ISP. Any TWO of these (from the same provider) should be entered for the DNS servers:

Service provider: vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
4.2.2.6

Service provider: ScrubIt
Public Name server IP address:
(a) 67.138.54.100
(b) 207.225.209.66

Service provider:OpenDNS
Public Name server IP address:
a) 208.67.222.222
b) 208.67.220.220

Any of these public DNS server will work, just log into your router and change "Primary DNS Address" and "Secondary DNS Address" and enter any 2 of these addresses, or if your Mac is connected directly to the modem, then it's under the System Preference -> NetWork, then change the network card settings, say for example > Airport -> Configure...->TCP/IP ->Then give the DNS IP in "DNS servers", on your Mac.

Make sure you take note of your existing DNS addresses - just in case you have problems and need to swap back. :P

Hope that help out.

SS

No problem. :P There is also another method which works, but that was much more complicated - basically running a local host DNS server using BIND, But I think that may be just a tad more involved than you would like. ;)

Good luck! :dontgetit:

Does someone else in your house use the internet too on a Windows machine? Possibly download stuff?

I've found in my house PCs, Macs, and torrent downloading do not mix with good results. If my housemates using Windows start a torrent application, my Mac gets a connection speed that's akin to 14.4 dial up. And if I start my torrent application all the Windows machines suffer the consequences. I've been sifting through forums for a while trying to work out how to fix this.

Hi Bean, ;D

Tis not really related to your internet problem I dont think but...

Why don't you upgrade your OS to 10.4.9? The highest you can have without buying the new one :s It really have no clue to if that will have anything to do with your internet connection... probably doesnt... but you might as well be running up to date. Sorry for the 'probably very useless comment'

Im putting mine on the net next week... that should be interesting with it being 4 years old! eeek! I see major problems on the horizon....

No 'anti-mac' comments, please >;D

Now thats not very fair, after all the 'get a Mac' comments you've made when other people have had problems with their PCs! :P

Any of these public DNS server will work, just log into your router and change "Primary DNS Address" and "Secondary DNS Address"

i think im right in thinking that bean is still in university and then in which case its down to the IT Administration to sort stuff amongst the router.

Mac Internet troubleshooting guide

have a run through that.

it seems strange to me that msn messenger works (its getting a connection but not quickly) and as SS said this could have been caused by the updates?

Know this seems a strange question but have you put the cable in the back of the mac and just given it a wriggle? could be the actual socket is a bit iffy?

oh and it sounds like its blocking port 80 as far as i can remember msn doesnt use port 80 all the time. it just finds a connection.

ill have to do some research into it today... and ill post if i find anything.

That's only true up to the point at which the user physically connects to the ISP (the uni in this case), anything past that point, or NOT supplied by the uni, is the user's equipment. And not many ISP racks have a web enabled "front end" for config... ;D

I didn't know if she was connecting via the uni's LAN from with in the Halls, or if she's connecting to the WAN from her house / flat located elsewhere. Also no idea if she has a router or not - so I included that in just in case. :P

Some unis are fully fledged ISPs and the user is able to connect from outside of the univerity premises, in which case it's just the same as using any other ISP.

Slightly OT, but if you happen to be lucky enough to have access to a uni ISP, you can watch Freeview channels streamed directly over the network via multicast. It's called "Freewire" :

http://www.freewiretv.com/

Also works if your own ISP supports multicast data traffic (not many do though, most block it).

Well, I'm back! :P

Don't ask me how.... I've no idea. At all!

I took the mac into the studio today and hooked it up to the wireless there and the internet was fine!! So then we thought it's gotta be something to do with the ethernet settings etc...

so we plugged it into the network in the computer suite and it worked there! :P

And now I've bought it home, plugged it in and it works! :dontgetit:

And apparently it had nothing to do with my machine! ;D

Thanks everyone for your help! :P

What has happened is your mac has seen the light and turned into a PC.

Problem? Take it out and take it back in again = FIXED! It works for windows!
Maybe it's running XP in stealth mode? (an upgrade?!!!?)
