Hi,

im (still) having big problems with my engine and ive checked everything apart from the coil and doing a compression test as far as i can think of. the list of replaced parts is now: starter motor, dizzy, dizzy cap, points, condensor, sparks, HT leads and carb needle and im sure a few other bits and bobs. ive checked over the carb and seems ok, fuel still going in so i guess pumps ok, all plugs are sparking and im running out of ideas. hence a compression test is overdue!

so, can anyone local with a compression tester come give me a hand maybe? wednesday 2pm onwards or thursday, friday, saturday all day would be great. im trying to get her running for christmas eve you see, to get to the girlfriends and back on christmas day.

thanks >_<

Worth checking valve clearances before you do a compression test, they make a huge difference.

What is the problem with the engine? Not starting?

There is not much to them really.

Take all plugs out
Screw comp. tester into plug hole
Reset gauge (button on side)
Turn engine over with foot flat to the floor
Take your reading
Reset gauge and remove
Repeat another 3 times

All your really looking for is a cosistency between all the cylinders.

it starts most of the time now but cylinders 2 and 3 are barely making any difference to it running, i cant even be totally sure theyre firing. so its basically running on just 1 and 4 and has a huge lack of power.

how do i check the valve clearences? id look at the haynes bible but i havnt got it with me at the moment.

well its not totally true. i would go get one if i knew what i was looking for in the readings i get and what to do from there on, but i dont. so basically im asking for someone with a lot more experience with engines and minis to help me out, im not just looking for someone to bring me a compression test. :withstupid:

if there was oil in water about a month ago then it will still mean the headgaskets gone, and will now only have mixed back in, dont bother with the oil until thats checked,

the compression should be anything over 80psi with all 4 cyls running +-20psi(max) to each other.

basically screw into a plug hole, turn engine over until scale steadied and read....repeat on all 4.

std rocker gap is 15thou, see haynes how to check or search on here(its there somewhere)

it could be gasket failure between the two cylinders
