Make sure you know what thread the new cones are and make sure the thread is good and clean and the compressor screws in OK before assembly. The write down whether they are metric or imperial in the front of your Haynes manual for reference for next time - that way you shouldn't bu66er the threads.

Unfortunally I didn't wind in the compressor enough, due to trying to get the trumpet/adjusta ride to sit sraight! :withstupid:

With Smootharides or red dot cones it might not be possible though as I think the rubber springs are taller on those.

That is correct.

You might be able to lash up a tap onto an extension to re-cut/chase the threads out from above?

Thank you all ever so much,

I will be getting new ones, of which all springs that are truly new made are metric.

Basically i should follow the Haynes manual backwards (sort of) for getting the upper arm out, so the trumpet removal and rubber cone spring are the last steps!

Also when i removed one of the bolts, next to the hole used by the tool, the thread had broken, so ow i cant screw it back in, and i believe it holds the sub frame to the cross member. So im guessing i could user a slightly bigger bolt, and it could make its own thread? any other ideas??

Cheers for the Piccie, there the inadequate instructions i got with the tool!!!

Well, ill give it another go tomorrow, this time, ill whack a Jack under the Upper suspension arm, and really try and compress it. As the engine is out there isnt much weight acting upon it. Might get someone to sit on the side see if i can get some compression going!!!

I've been confusing myself with the types of tools and it's all just come back to me. You have two different rod extensions in the Sykes version and a seperate pulling rod. You screw the correct rod extension into the socket end of the pulling rod and then tighten it with the locknut. The pulling handle needs to already be in place on the rod when you fit the extension I think. Then drop the whole thing down through the tube. You didn't need to remove the locktab from the tower, there should have been a hole through it for the compressor. Make sure you are using the rod extension the right way around and grease up the handle and pulling threads as I said above.

If that sounds like what you've already done, just keep trying. So long as it's all properly assembled and threaded when you start pulling nothing can in theory go wrong.

Yer, i will try again today.
There was a piece of rubber i should of removed, instead of taking the plate off! it doesn't make any difference its just now i have the problem with the sub frame bolts!
If i don't have much luck ill try and remove the Suspension arm and then the trumpet and finally the Rubber Cone!

Thanks everyone for your help, i will report back later with any news!

Kindest Regards

Alastair.

Fixing that subframe bolt might be difficult. When you say the thread had broken what do you mean? Id is stripped/deformed on the bolt? If so a new bolt might screw in if you go carefully - it would be better to try and run a tap down the subframe thread to chase it out though. Trying to screw in a larger bolt will prove wholly pointless and may cause more damage.

If the bolt has snapped and left part of itself in the subframe then all I can suggest at this stage is get the cones out and assess the access to the remains, however I would be prepared for removing the subframe :D

Hey, I reallly need some help!
I have managed to remove one of the rubber cones, and upper suspension arms!! However the Nearside Rubber cone spring has definitly lost its thread at one time or another. So i tried yestrday to remove the upper suspension arm without compressing the spring, but i cant get out the Pivot shaft it just wont come out. Has anyone got any ideas on how i can get it out???

Ok the Subfram bolt, deformed at sompoint, and when i unscrewd it from the subfram it has also deformed the thread on the subframe as it came up. The point of a large bolt would be just make a new thread, that can be used. I was thinking maybe heli-Coil?

Thankyou all for your replies i really appreciate it!

Kindest Regards

Alastair

Did you remove the rebound buffer under the top arm? So you can lower it enough
I had to hammer the shaft out, although the cone were no more pressing on it, its was just stuck. Did you take out the stopping plate? (or whatever its called), oval shaped, attached to the subframe with 2 small bolts

How would removing the Rebound rubber under the arm help??
I cant hammer the Pivot shaft out as with a moke, there is no room to work between the Passangers foot well and the Pivot shaft!!
I have taken out the plate with the two bolts.

Regards.

I was assuming the shaft was stuck because of the pressure from the cone, so if you lower the arm further, you can release more pressure from the cone :D
I dont know about the moke, there's not much space either on the mini, I remember having difficulties hitting it, used a piece of wood at an angle and hit on the wood

How would removing the Rebound rubber under the arm help??

So you can lower the suspension arm more. Just don't forget to put it back in afterwards! :D

Still got the problem, the actual rebound rubber is GONE, it has completely dissapeared, i remember there being on the other side!!
Is there any way of removing the stress, or pulling out that pivot shaft. I was thiking i could hack saw through the trumpet and thn buy a new one.

But i really dont want to do that to be honest!

Thanks alot guys!!
Kindest regards

ALASTAIR.
