That's a great idea Bec.

As for the debate on Limited Editions being based on either the Mini City E or Mayfair, well I believe that if the Limited Edition in question has a trim spec lower than the Mini Mayfair, then it is classed as being based on the Mini City E.

So that covers quite a few and only the models like the Mini 25 and Mini 30 etc were truly based on the Mini Mayfair.

Right I'll just get off my anal soapbox now.

No it had a triple instrument pack when the Mayfair was still only equipped with a twin and it was the first round faced Mini to get 12" wheels and 8.4" discs.

It may have had the same high final drive as the City E though?

Oh Jean, when i visited my friend the other day, who owns the bodyshop. he has a mini 25 at his house, and that has lots of bits on it

oh and Jeff, i think you know Stuart Scarfe too :-

I think Stuart has painted pretty much every Mini I've ever had. Top bloke! Do you mean this 25? Too good to break IMO.

he's breaking that?! :dontgetit: nooooo! :dontgetit:

(Does he have a good condition nimbus bumper? :techsupport:)

I've got pretty much all the original mini25 parts for Ronnie though! :dontgetit:

Don’t even look like there’s must rust from those picks either, well anything would have less rust than what was on mine.

That's a great idea Bec.

The 25 is based on the Mayfair, but had the 8.4”disk brakes and the 120mph 3 clock dash from the clubman, all though I’m personally offended when people assume as the 25 or any other special is based on the lower spec model of the range then it isn’t any better or more special.

No it had a triple instrument pack when the Mayfair was still only equipped with a twin and it was the first round faced Mini to get 12" wheels and 8.4" discs.

As above, it wasn’t till about 89ish when the Mayfair final got the 3-clock set up, but only the 90mph Speedo and a little later the 110mph Speedo.

It may have had the same high final drive as the City E though?

And yes the 25 does share the same 2.9 final drive with the City E.

I could go on but i've posted it all before many times.

Talk about spotting this at the last minute - last time I have a few days off to fix my Mini, lol!
Like Craig says, we're not adverse to constuctive criticism - anything that helps us to improve and deliver the goods is most welcome. We're still quite a new team in many respects and there's room for improvement in all of us.
We are very aware of the problem at the mag, and have taken steps to ensure these errors, within reason, become a thing of the past.
This is not an excuse by any means, but somethimes mistakes can slip through the net. Personally I have only written one buying guide - on the 1275 GT which I consider to be my expert feild. Even so, I wrongly said the voltage regulator on early cars is on the inner wing rather than the bulkhead. Trivial maybe, but still frustrating from my point of view.
As well as a buying guide, these features are intended as a keepsake on particular models and we want to ensure there's something for everyone. They're not just for special edition cars - if we could find a mint 79 City Auto, we'd cover it! As such, the information can be very difficult to source. In most cases the info is out there, but there's not always a club we can turn to for every model, and as has been rightly pointed out, there's a lot of conflicting information out there. For example, I once owned a mainstream Cooper with an oil cooler, sunfoof and half leather seats, none of which were standard features. The original owner swore it had never been modified too - it turns out these were RSP parts retro fitted by the dealer!
Mitigating circumstances aside, we'll do our best to make sure this doesn't happen again. In the meantime, if anyone knows of a good standard car we've yet to feature, get in touch.
Oh, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with being anal IMO!
Cheers

Jeff (Minimag)

again another truly respectfully response to my criticism's, i think that if this post has proved one thing, its that the mini mag team know how to take it on the chin.

well done guys, keep up the good work, and believe it or not i genuinely mean that. i fully take on board your points about not being experts on every model and that you may sometimes actually be quoting other peoples mistakes. i actually now look on your jobs with a new found sympathy, no I'm not doing a u-turn on my views, but i can now see it from the other side of the fence.

maybe we should all try a little harder to work together on theses type of things in the future, maybe the specialist groups should come forwards with the offer of assistance

It is down to reviewers & readers alike to point out these oversights, and it really seems to be people like The Anorak who do bother to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard to right these wrongs, but it is invaluable that they do.*

*However dull & anal that makes them appear.

cheers Juju

and as for the cars that do contradict the "true spec of the model", these are down to mistakes on the production line and/or dealers retro fitting bits for one reason or another, there are loads of these out there (we even have one mainstream on the register with an RSP engine !!) but they do not give reason to start re-writing the true and generally presented spec of the models.
it's common knowledge that many cars actually left the factory with the early style of minilight alloy on one side and the later style on the other, this doesnt mean that that's the way they intended it to be

PS: where do i find my personalised emotion then

My german mainstream model had a factory-fitted oil cooler, no logo on the inlet duct and clear glass.

I do apreciate though, that people like Anorak share their knowledge on here, be it anal or not.

yes, it's supposed to have the clear glass, would of been pointless putting tinted glass on the options list if it didn't

It was late 1985 when the Mayfair got a tachometer and the Mini City E the 2 pack instruments instead of the classic central cyclops speedo and yes unfortunately the Mini range then got inflicted with the dreaded Nippon Seiki instruments instead. The Mini 25 was lucky enough to have received the standard Mini 1275GT style Smiths Instruments.

Perhaps we should have some kind of 'Challenge Anorak' quiz! Would make a nice feature. Maybe I could have a go too - I might even surprise myself! :D

Orrrr, how about 'we' (do you like my use of 'we' there!), write the buyers guides for your magazine each month, for which you pay 'us', then if you have any nutters like Anorak (:D) going anal on you, you can just pass them on to us!

Do you realise how easy it would be to make a 'going anal' joke here??

I'll put you down for the Minus then Jammy...
