Either way it was hot enough to make the early steel wheels crack with alarming results when they were first rallied and raced.

That's why subsequent wheels received a little MG tag stamped into them to denote the fact they were capable of being used in motorsport.

But slicks are as you know cross plies and they get hot so maybe there is your answer, ;)


Cross ply tyres and slick tyres are not the same thing.

Look at the tyres on a Formula 1 car, they do not have any tread on them.

I know most of those already, but it still doesn't anwer the question about 10" wheels getting hotter than Formula 1 tyres!

Normal road car tyres will never get as hot as Formula 1 tyres.

Road tyres use tread to grip, Formula 1 tyres use heat to grip (i.e. slick tyres).

I think that unless you know a great deal about tyre manufacturing through the ages you can't really say that you know something is untrue. I don't know much about crossply tyres (or any other type of tyre!), but I'm willing to believe what has been said, purely because I know materials can get very hot when large forces try and bend and alter them in ways they weren't designed to take.

I'm also pretty sure that my first Mini (1975 MKIII Mini 1000) had little MG tags stamped on each of it's steel 10" wheels.

Back to the facts then

The 12" wheels standardised on Minis in 1984 gave virtually the same rolling radious as the original 10" wheels because of the lower profile tyres fitted to them.


Because vans were exempt from purchace tax in the sixties, the Mini van cost only £ 360 when launched. It soon became the poor mans sports car, some even being raced on circuits

The 'eyeball' fresh air vents are so called as they were originally introduced in response the 1960 conjunctivitis epidemic that swept through the Home Counties.

alec issignis was a chain smoker so the mini had an ashtray as standard but he hated music so there was no stereo!

Eh? Stereo Radiogrammes were available back them, although you'd have a hard time trying to fit one of those sideboard musicogramme things in the back of a Mini. My folks, or actually grandad bought a Stereo Radiogramme back in 1961/62 and it was fantastic.

The 1958 Cadillac coupe de ville had a radio fitted as standard. :wub:

Minnie Mouse first appeared in a Disney Cartoon in 1928, 51 years before the Mini celebrated the 20th anniversary of its launch. Her name is spelt with 2 n's and an e, which also helps to avoid any confusion.

Mice cannot drive Minis as their legs are too short to reach the pedals - even without sitting on cushions to see over the steering wheel.

How about if they wear platform shoes too?


There are now two classic minis parked next to each other in the car park of the Institute for Animal Health at Pirbright. Until last week, there was only mine. ;)
