Bit of a setback today
Replaced the ultimate engine steady bar bushes. In the process, realised that one of the bolts that holds the engine steady on to the head - the very front one which goes through the thermostat housing - has snapped inside the head - it just pulled out. It was siliconed in, and the whole thermostat housing was siliconed around the edge. Naturally we had to take the bolts out to replaced the steady bushes, and when we put everything back, water now pÃsses out of the thermostat housing, onto the fan and sprays everywhere on the passengers side of the engine bay - straight onto the flasher units and wiper motor and straight out of the front of the grille.
Why on earth couldn't the
idiot who managed to overtighten it just fix it properly? All it needs is the housing taking off, the bolt remains drilling out and a new bolt threading in. Couple of hours work? >
I take it it was the same
idiot that overtightened the bolts on the Timing Chain Cover and then took it all off and put blue sealer around the gasket, instead of having the holes drilled out again and the bolts re-threaded. Why bodge things?
Seeing as though we had no "proper" sealer to put around it, we used exhaust gum (the only thing we had available at the time) - which didn't last 10 seconds (literally) so I've had to limp home with it, spraying water out.
So an oil leak, and a water leak that I have to deal with - all because of some
w*nker who's bodged it up.
Apart from that, used some Engine Flush with the oil to try stop it smoking - I don't believe its made any difference at all but we'll soon see. Put some new good quality 20W50 oil in and a new oil filter on anyway, so thats something not to worry about for a while.
Looks like I will have to call Steve at Minifixit on Monday morning and hopefully he will be able to sort out the water leak sometime this week. Not prepared to drive her anywhere until it's done because of the chance of overheating due to water pÃssing EVERYWHERE.
