If they want to give the food to people who are starving why don't they send it to them.. lol
I saw it on +1 too.

I take it they were living off benefits then aswell as C**p out of bins?

You are all weird!

They were only eating stuff that was chucked out at supermarkets. Legally supermarkets cant keep food that is over the used by, so they throw it out, but most the time to food is ok.

I say waste not want not, I think its a good idea!!

I used to work in a supermarket, we used to gather up all the food that was out that evening (but would still be fine to eat, sarnies snacks etc) and give it to the night shelter down the road. we then had to stop because of the old H+S C**p. so we ended up having to bin literaly wheelie bins full of perfectly edible food, drove me mad. such a waste. we then had to start compacting it, and adding dye to stop freegan/homeless types. So wasteful. I dont see the problem with it, better than breaking into your house an raiding your fridge!

You were close babes, there are two dates on food, used by and sell by. Legally supermarkets can't sell food once its past its sell by date, even if its not past its used by date. So as Raz said, most of the food supermarkets throw out is perfectly ok to eat! In fact I well would have eaten those Malteasers! :ermm:

I don't think they were claiming off benefits, they just didn't strike me as the people with the sort of beliefs that would have them living off benefits. I do wonder if the rich family gave them a donation for the new laptop and motorhome though? Or maybe they were doing part time jobs, hence why they were thinking of getting a flat.

YEa, this is my point exactly, its all fine, and just gets thrown away and put into the ground :).

I know a couple of 'Freegans' -you're right Raz, they don't harm anyone, so leave them be!

I must admit though, in my experience, it's usually people who are very wealthy (with enough savings to rely on) or who have a well off family to run to when they actually need something expensive! They think living like that is going to save the planet, walk round in rainbow striped jumpers and linen tie-dye trousers with Jesus sandals on, when they could actually afford to shop at Gucci =] hehehe

I have no problems with 'Freegans'. I do have a problem with supermarkets destroying the food though. My brother used to have to destroy £100's worth of food every Friday night when he worked for Tesco. All the staff signed petitions stating that they would remove packaging and all accosiation with Tesco before giving the food to the homeless shelter, but they were still refused permission. Like 'Bun said, it all had to be squashed up with dyes and bleach!! :ermm:
There is something seriously wrong with a world where we destroy food, when there are children starving everywhere..... :)

Yea, I hate that too, why waste it when plenty of people need it or would be sooo grateful for it =]

Quick question though? Is it technically stealing if your going on to private property and taking stuff from their bins?

It's the son who i felt sorry for.
He had no friends to play with, got dropped off way down the road from the school so nobody saw him, had to live in a caravan with no personnal space, had no toys, etc. All he had was that gerbil that crapped all over the dining table!
It wasnt his choice to live that lifestyle. Did you see how much happier he was when the posh bird took over the rules..........when he walked into his 'own' room in that rented flat, had his first birthday celebration/party, had his hair cut at tony&guy and got his new laptop - he looked like a different person.

I ended up watching it and finding it quite interesting.

Didn’t realise there was that much waste from Supermarkets. Seems a real shame it cant go to homeless shelters.

I did have one question and that was as Christians why were they essentially stealing? Seems a bit contradictory.

I did also wonder if they got money from there cult ohhh I mean religious group, for the new motor home.

Another thing I found strange it that they don’t like waster then drive a massive motor home round? Not the most planet friendly mode of transport.

Also I found their argument for why they don’t pay tax yet use the state schools and NHS a bit weak to say the least.

Did anyone watch the aftermath show?

good point about the stealing...

I worked in tesco and ive seen the amount of waste of good food. but it doesnt stop there, ive seen huge amounts of xmas cards get destroyed, old stock that just didnt sell, loads of stuff...

Its fair to say tho they arent doing anyone any harm other than potentially themselves, so leave em to it. At least they arent blowing us up like some religous extremeists!
