Ive spent so long trying to get my flywheel off now that i think im just going to have to smash it off and get a new one.. is there any preferable way of doing it? and will it damage the crank... thats my biggest fear! I really cannot believe that it wont come off! Usually they take alot of grunt, granted, but this one is insisting on destroying my life!

yeah ive tried heat, but still didnt budge. i didnt want to heat it too much though to avoid doing in the oil seal. Its either going to take someone that has alot of experience in the engines, or a big fat smash i think

you need to heat it up with oxy acetylene, a blow torch flame is too big and gets the whole area hot.

As i said in my other post don't worry about the heating side of things, you would probably have to have the flywheel glowing red before and damage is done to the seal.

You can split them with a chisel.

If you have the engine out of car you can grind down it about an inch (inch from crank left) then smash it with a chisel down the ground out groove.

sounds like a real pain in the backside. Once my flywheel fell off as the centre bolt decided to unscrew itself. As a suggestion why don't you try turning your engine over on your starter motor with the keyed washer and bolt removed? that way its not 'connected' to the crank... it may free off. if not you have nothing to loose.
you could even do this as well as putting it in gear and using the brakes stop the engine rotating - then the power from the starter will be concentrated on the flywheel.

just a thought.

I've been thinking if you could crank a flywheel loose. the flywheel would be tied to the gearbox by the friction plate so I don't think putting it in gear would help. You'd need to lock the engine up somehow.

Might be safer to try and lock the flywheel against turning then turn the crank by the front pulley bolt?

hi i have removed some tuff flywheels and i find the best way of doing this is to put your clutch puller on the flywheel as normal tighten it as far as you dare, then with the starter motor removed with a soild steel bar hit the flywheel from the back (not on the ring gear) a few good hits, then rotate the flywheel half turn and do it again then see if the flywheel puller will tighten some more if not continue until it does and you should get it off with out doing to much damage .

How big is the hammer you're using? Get a bigger one

I had a really troublesome one but eventually got it off with lots of heat from a blowtorch and a BFH

This will be the least helpful addition to your problems but I just had to add it....

I really feel your pain Mike. Your frustration is tangible and I hope you get it sorted soon.......BUT.......Your threads have been highly entertaining!!

When the time comes for my flywheel to come off I'll give you shout for advice. In the meantime; Good luck and keep the faith :)
