Hi
I will soon be painting my wheels of my 1960 Mini Minor. I want to leave the tyres on the wheels, but remove the balance weights which are on the oputside of the wheel. I have tried masking the tyre, but nothing seems to stick, ie, masking tape.

Can anyone please give advise on how to paint the wheel/mask the tyre?

Thanks

you can buy special thingies for this job
like cardboard circles with a cut in it.

you slide it between the tyre and the wheel, or you could just make your own .

cant remember where you can get them though ;D

I'd at least take the tyre off the bead, makes it look much more professional. Deflate it and jump on it! then go over the tyre with cellulose thinners, and let it dry. Tape will then stick to it fine.

Hi

So you recommend that I deflate the tyre, and force the bead of the tyre away from the rim?. I guess then I wouldn't need the card masking templates the other chap was talking about. If the tyre bead is well away from the rim after deflating, i guess i could mask by using masking tape on the iside of the rim with brown paper to overhang the tyre?

A mate of mine put fairy liquid on the tyre walls before painting, sprayed the wheels (overspraying onto the tyres) and then washed off the overspray from the tyres once dry as it had stuck to the fairy liquid and not the rubber.

Worked a treat!

When I've ever painted wheels with the tyres on I've always managed to get (decent) masking tape to stick though.....

Yup that would work fine.

If the tyres are clean I find warming them with a heat gun (dont go mad though!) makes the tape stick.

I used the washing up liquid technique and it worked like a charm. I also deflated the tyre first.
Just be careful not to get it on the rim and don't apply it too thin or the paint will stick to the tyre.

I bet washing up liquid with a brush to brush it round the tyre would work well?

With that technique you could not possibly paint the whole of the outer rim of the wheel, as they have to be touching the rim to stay in place.

And yes Jack you brush on the washing up liquid, don't just squirt it

Hi
Well, I have decided to try and release the tyre bead from the rim in order to paint it properly. However, the tyre only partially deflates, and when I stand on the tyre to try and break the seal between the bead and rim, it has no effect (I weigh only 10 stone!).

Any ideas on how to completely deflate the tyre?
