Really I'd have thought panel wipe would evaporate really quickly and it'd go all gummy.. :) I'll try it next week!

It does evaporate very quickly but I'm only talking about flatting out minor marks, not disasters!

It does go gummy if you rub any more than very lightly!!

Havnt any of the paint reps told you about it?

Nope our paint reps are useless! I figure it all out myself.

Most paint reps are failed painters anyway!

Haha!

Those blowers for water-based paints draw the booth warm air through them onto the panel they dont produce heat themselves. if you warm the air around the car and blow with the paint gun it does do the same just not as well. i have used a paint stripper gun to force dry the paint before does work well but as you said if you are blowing anything towards the paint it can throw debris on to the paint. Oh the joys water based has some really good points but not as user friendly as solvent for diy painting. For my custom/airbrushing i use a water based paint made by createx called autoair it is great for this type of painting where you want to mask over it once heat set 30seconds later you can mask over it.
Hope it turns out ok.
i dont know how much of the car you are painting i have only done max of two panels at once with the water-based (out of booth).

I'm just going to paint the front end and drivers door at the mo.

Might not get to do it today after all, spent most of yesterday replacing rear brakes.

Off out to garage in a bit though.

I've got a half day on Thursday so might do it then

Thanks everyone for your help, very much appreciated

I will post pics up(good or bad) ASAP

Excellent!

Brave man for trying it at home but looks to be going well!

By the way, if you have high solids 2pack laquer, it should be a 2:1 mix of laquer and hardener, but I always put a dash of thinner in to make it sit flatter, more like 2:1:1.

I dont know if it would be a good idea if your conditions are quite cool, but if you find the laquer quite orange peely, then give it a go, but go steady!

Looking forward to seeing the results!

Ok then here it goes 2nd coat!!

To be honest I don't see that much differance yet.

The drying time is longer than 2 pack base cost but it will go off in about 20 mins

I am quite happy with the way it looks so far, haven't had the paint fall off onto the floor either

Definately getting there mate!

Silvery / light colours do take a fair few coats to cover.

Even when it all looks covered, Id give it another one just to make sure as sometimes you get it into daylight and can see through into the primer!

How much basecoat have you used for 2 coats so far then?

Have you thinned it?

Hi, it seems to be covering well, I have used it straight from the tin with no thining and its going on well.

So far I have used @ 1/2 ltr to do 3 coats

I think I will give it 1 more coat and then start and heat the garage up in preperation for the 2 pack clear coat.

So far so good

Seamus
