Looking good! I always add 10% thinners to the 2:1 lacquer/thinners. What make of lacquer have you got?

Hi, its lechler Macrofan HS flash clearcoat
According to the instructions
its 1000ml+500ml+100ml
I'm quite happy with the way its going.
Can I leave the basecoat to dry overnight or is it best to do it all in one hit?
Is it possible to put the clear on whilst the base is still "sticky wet"

Ah that's pretty good lacquer, I'd use it 2:1 with 10% thinners. You can leave the basecoat overnight if you like, in fact it would probably be a good idea if you have no heat, just to make sure it's gone off properly. Just make sure nothing is going to crawl or walk over it! Never apply lacquer over wet waterbase basecoat, it will go all weird and holey underneath. I think of it like mixing water with oil, it doesn't work! You can sometimes just about get away with it with solvent, but it's not a good idea.

yeah i like lechler clears they polish up really nice. i also use maxmayer i think its vertualy the same stuff i think the names are linked. water based is wierd stuff when you put it on i like the way it sometimes looks like the wrong colour then as it dries changes(fingers crossed lol). Looking good though

Thanks everyone for your support.
Its taken me about 4 hours so far but I am very happy with the results!!
Have just given it its 4th coat and it seems to have covered well.
I will give a coat of clear tommorrow and will post the results!!
So far so good
Thanks Again

Just thought I'd chip in here and say good job. Someone's got to test out waterbased from home. I'm going to do it eventually and what you're doing is brilliant... if it works out

I also think you are very brave for attempting water base at home when everyone tells you what a pig it is, its looking brilliant wait till you get the clearcoat on
it will really shine then. Top ho to ya

I reckon its working well for you cause your doing it with the garage door up.
Got plenty of air flow to dry it!

Ah so you noticed!!!
It was raining a bit outside so I didn't think there would be any harm!!
Anyway
Round 2
Left it overnight and it looked like this

humpfrey_024.jpg 311.01K 70 downloads
It still looked good!!
No runs and by the finish I had used 3/4 of ltr paint
The matt dark finish showed up every imperfection!! DOH
I applied the clear coat mixed 2-1 with 10% thinners
And it looked like this

humpfrey_026.jpg 317.06K 58 downloads
If you make out the finish through the fumes it looks ok!!
It Really shows the lack of fumes using the water based base coat compared to the 2 pack clear
I'm going to give it 30 mins to flash off and give it another coat
Thanks for all your support

Yeah great job.
someone posted that the gti is no good for waterbased that it needs to be a gti-w i dug out my paperwork for my gti and it stated that it is compliant for waterbased and solvent sae goes for my sri. So your gun should be fine.

My bad!
I thought the 'W' was for water!
Anyway, finish looks great, should look spot on with abit of a polish!
Well done!

Ok then 2nd coat of clear

The clear looks a bit orange peely out of the gun but dries out quite nicely!!
Overall I'm over the moon with it.
How many coats of clear would you recommend?
Thanks
Seamus

I would have thought the same just thought i wouldcheck my ones never had a problem i just dont like chopping and changing between waterbased and solvent so i keep the gund specifically for that.
I normally go for 3 good coats so i have something to flat back with no worries if its a good finish sometimes leave it at two

Looking good! 2 coats is the norm with lacquer. The "W" is GtiW does stand for water, the only difference between the W and the normal Gti is a slightly different fluid tip and air cap, which atomizes water base paint better. Either gun works fine, but the best is a 1.4 GTiW.
