Yes they are wide but its the offset thats the problem!!

If you look at mini wheel and put a ruler across the front of the tyre, then measure the distance between the edge of the ruler and the nut holes, then do the same to a metro rim this distance will be less on the metro rim.

This means than when you bolt the wheel to the car the innermost edge of the wheel will be closer to the car than the the mini one. This will then foul on the suspension componants and hence the need for spacers!!

Phew!! I think i have explained that correctly!!

yes you have, i knew that but did not think it would be that bad with 1.25 spacers on....
so should i just spend time looking for mini ones, is that best?

Probably yes!!

Slyoldfox was selling a set of the alloy minispeed 10" cooper rep wheels recently in for sale section.

These wheels have a huge offset and should fill those arches nicely

I used to have a set of the MK1 Metro Turbo wheels on one of my ol Minis i had 3 inches of spacer to make them fill a Group 5 arch. With 2" of spacer they will fill a mayfair arch.

It's not the size of the spacer which is the problem, all you're doing is correcting the offset of the wheel which is perfectly ok. As MTP says, a 1-2" spacer (or adaptor) will be required to get the metro wheel in the right place for the std arches....
