The LynxAE R1 engine kit wasn't complete when I talked to them recently they were in the process of designing the transfer box diff assembly.

They have fitted an R1 engine into the subframe as per the picture but the important bit the transfer box isn't done.

It definately can be done and has been done I have seen two R1 minis which look standard from the outside see attached picture

Oh yeah, forgot about insuring it. Mind you Ive heard that bike engined cars arent too bad to insure for some reason. It may be cheaper to ensure than my 1400 given the R1 is a 1ltr.

Ill be insuring mine with Adrian Flux as these gave me by far the cheapest quote. I havent tried Mini World yet though.

that pic has been on the website for ages now (over a year), as you say they seem to be taking their time developing it.

Rally sport replicas do a kit like this. Last i heard it was in the testing stages. And was really cheap. But that uses two gearbox's the motorbike gearbox and a custom mini box with 1xforward gear and 1xreverse gear So in theory you'd have 6 forward and 6 reverse.and i think the kit was less than 2grand.

I see this car at my local mini garage with out the engine in yesterday. I couldnt beleive it when the owner said it was once fitted with a Yammy R1 engine up front. It looks to be a briliant package and all im thinking of is................. A three engined powered mini lol :) Two in the back & one up front. Just imagine it, 500BHP!!! 900BHP PER TONNE!!!!

Bring on those Skylines I say lol :cheese:

Hang on, just got another flash of stupidity.......3 400BHP hyabusas, 1200BHP.......2000Bhp PER TONNE..lol :w00t: Only joking, there wont be a drive shaft and diff that would take that on a mini.

A standard busa engine is 200bhp, to get 400 out takes a lot of tuning! But ou wouldn't need that much power. It'd be impossible to get it on the road, and no benefit in top speed as power required increases with the square of speed, a mini goes exponential at about 150mph i think - i.e. won't go faster!

I sent an email to LynxAE when i first read this topic, just yesterday they have replied.

I asked them approximate time for the kit to be available, and approximate price.

Heres what they said:

Dear Joe

Thank you very much for your enquiry and interest in the R1 Mini conversion.

One of the benefits of our conversion over other conversions is that the R1engine mounts in the original Mini Subframe and engine bay with few modifications in fact there are no body modifications required and it will fit in both the round front Mini and the Clubman front Mini. The conversion utilises many standard Mini components.

Unfortunately as the kit is still in the development stage quoting a price is very difficult. However we have a target price of less than £5,000. Obviously this price is not yet confirmed and is only a guide. We are hoping to be able to keep the price on the lower side. This depends largely on the cost of building the reverse gearbox and diff carrier which will connect the output from the R1 gearbox to a standard mini differential enclosed in a bespoke alluminium diff housing that we have designed. Mini drive shafts will then transmit the power to the road wheels. The standard R1 engine puts out approx. 147bhp, so compare the price and reliability of the R1 conversion to the price and reliability of building an A series with similar power and it wins hands down.

We have done a similar R1 engine conversion into a MG Midget (recently featured in retro cars) which is road legal and is also used for hill climbs. We do not have any figures for the Midget but it will out perform a freinds Lotus Elise. The engine in this and the other Yamaha R1 engine cars that we have been involved in have proved to be very reliable. At present we are concentrating on the R1 engine mainly due to it's small size. Other engines could be used but our kit is around the R1. There are turbo kits available if more bhp is required. R1 engines are pretty easy to get hold of and generally cost in the region of £1000 with carbs, wiring loom and engine managment. We are more than happy to source one for you if you wish.

The kit will contain, Instructions on how to carry out the conversion, Engine cradle, Exhaust manifold, Cooling system pipe work (it utilises the mini radiator), Radiator duct, Reverse gearbox/diff carrier, gear linkage. This specification may change without notice.

We hope to have the kit available later this year

We recommend that the brakes and preferably the suspension as well are upgraded at the same time.

I hope this answers your questions, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require more information.

Best regards
Richard Pulley

A standard Busa is about 180Bhp at best! not 200bhp but you are right about the amount of tuning required you must have deep pockets to think about doing that! :nugget:
