A foolproof fuel gauge can be made at home for a few pence, what you need is a lenth of bambo (a tomato cane will do ), :)
1, remove petrol cap ,
2, poke in bambo stick until it touches the botom of the tank :)
3, remove stick and read off fuel level :)

You can mark of the stick in 1/4 graduations if you want to be technical
This will work even if your battery is flat or the fuse has gone
remember to keep the stick in the boot !
this modifercation will work for all models and even on r/h tanks and is fully rust proof
If you use this method remember to send the royalty payment to :
Woody's wooden petrol gauge(patent applied for)
North Wales .

i have to keep stopping to see where my fuel is.....i can fill my tank to the rim, drive away (after paying you understand) and it'll drop down, the level goes down the harder i drive, then sits lower than whats there, if i stop, wait a minute it goes back up, its as if the rev's affect it...its wierd!

Does the temp gauge move as well?
If so it could be the voltage stabiliser thats faulty.
