The main aim is 1/4 mile, hence the 8-9k rpm, but will be used on the road... shows etc...

Nah, I appreciate the link and is the main reason why I asked what length of pipe people have used, just to get an indication of what works and what does not...

I'm also wondering if I should run a balance pipe between the two, same as I would running twin SU's ( will also give me somewhere to tap a vac pipe off for the cruise control.... yes it'll have a cruise on it :) ) not sure they'll allow me to cruise at Mach 1 tho'

Couldn't you modify a single 45 manifold?

I reckon aswell as the length any angle applied would be usefull too?

Split webers are the sex, something i plan to use on the next screamer when it gets finished. I think you'll find they derived from the works teams not for the rule against twin chokes, but the rule stating they had to use a standard manifold. The works teams wanted to use a weber, but because they couldnt fit a weber manifold, they 'not so simply' cut one in half and used a std twin SU manifold. The webers themselves had to be adapted, by cutting the flange off and welding one on that ment they matched the bolt pattern of the twin SU manifold.

Power gains are minimal, but i'd imagine - like when you have twin SU's over one bigger SU - the benifits are felt through much better throttle response.

Guessworks, you are in rugby are you not? See if you can get in touch with Southam mini metro centre speak to Rod or Colin, they might be kind enough to let you go down and take a peak at Pete Barkers mini (if its there - which it usually is) They recently converted a set of webers for him works stylee. But also if you're really nice you might be able to persuade Simon who works there to show you one of the many sets of longman spec splits he has.

Barkers car...

Must admit, when we were down there with Central for the rolling road shoot out, we (me and the person leaning over my very oily engine) were talking about my next engine, and when I mentioned weber's he did ask if I was going splits, at which point I only had the one so didn't probe much further.. but now I have two :)

What I also want to do is lean the engine forward a little, this is in an attempt to get the drive shafts on a level plain when the van has finished being lowered... but also will point the rod change at a slightly better angle so the gear change can come inboard without to much trouble... as most of the mk1 tunnel will be filled with exhaust pipe.

Obviously this will mean the angle of the carb in relation to a 'standard' manifold maybe a little odd and need adjusting.

twin split webbers are used so that each choke can be directly lined up with each inles port in the head for most power, just like twin SU's are both lined up with the ports..

If you want to know about splits call Gordon Dawkins at Carlow Engineering, 01268 792817.

He han a 1000cc Mini in the BTCC in the 60's and was the forst to use splits. He was with Glyn Swift, Nicky dad back then as well as Jon Mowatt and Peter Vickers.

He will be able to tell you everything you need to know.
