Stripping down the 850 this evening (had to go to Halfords to get flywheel puller and socket for the flywheel nut (the one that goes on the crank)), I've put the flywheel puller over the thrust plate (I think its called that) following the Haynes manual, started to tighten the bolt that goes through the middle, and its become really really tight, and the flywheel puller plate isn't even touching the thrust plate yet, is there something I've missed??

Have you taken the big bolt out that holds the flywheel on and the big key washer from underneath?

Yea. (Would I still be able to get the centre bolt of the flywheel puller in if that bolt was still in?!)

You don't want the puller to be touching the flywheel, have you put the thrust block in place as it looks like the centre bolt has gone it way too far. Have another look at the instructions and try again.

looking at the picture you should have a big thick washer that the main bolt presses into and onto the crank, the puller at the moment is not pulling the flywheel, it looks like you've screwed the bolt into the crank, which unfortunately could mean curtains for the crank...

Ah McBuggery! I think I know what your talking about. The problem was that the flywheel puller I got didn't have any instructions, so I was simply going off what the Haynes manual was telling me, I did have another couple of bits, along with another set of three bolts (I'm guessing metric?!). One sec and I'll get a pic of the bits I have left.....

Could be the same problem as the metro engine i got. Due to exposure to the elements and probably mis-use, the flywheel was effectively fused to the crank and would not come off by any means... 1.5m breaker bar on puller didn't help, heating the flywheel and cooling the crank till flywheel was red hot didn't help... hammers didn't help... engine was scrapped (after cam extraction )

I dunno, most things have come off the engine pretty easily upto now....

by the way, its the 'Laser Mini Fly Wheel (2 words?!) Puller' I'm pretty sure they shouldn't spell flywheel as two words but ah well!!

Yup, that thick black round thing is the thrust block which stops you chewing up the end of the crank.

Take the centre bolt out of the puller, hold the puller in place and tighten the three outer bolts evenly and when I say evenly I mean they must all be threaded in the same amount so that you get a straight pull (make sure you use the right set of bolts for your flywheel, one set is verto and one is not and you can wreck a flywheel using the wrong ones. Also make sure you put the thick washers under the bolt heads or you will break the puller) . Now pull the puller up tight onto the bolt heads and hold the thrust block in the end of the crank while threading in the centre bolt. When it is touching the thrust block it is ready to use. Make sure the flywheel keyway is horizontal (whichever way up the engine is standing it must be horizontal) and turn in the bolt a few flats and the wheel will drop off. Have something nice to catch the wheel on (like an old cushion or something) as standard wheels are very heavy and it will surprise you how heavy it is when it drops.

Lol, new crank on order!! Lol, ah well, I live and learn!

Thanks Dan, Bluemini, Pavel and Guessworks, am pretty sure I can now get the flywheel off without ruining anymore of the engine!! Just hope that crank was a rare or really decent one!!

Just one question, I'm guessing the crank keyway is the slot that goes through the middle of crank?
