You can use a scredriver ( I do ) but without too much difficulty you can make a locking plate which attaches to the starter motor threads, will be making one shortly out of a piece of angle iron I have kicking around, so will post the measurements etc when done... (that'll be on the CD too eventually)

Well stripping my first engine has certainly been an experience!! Ruined the crank, and when I was trying to get the little cog thing thats on the crank that the fan belt goes round, I managed to take a chunk out the cylinder wall, so now that is scrap!! Lol,

But I got the flywheel off (not before breaking the plate that goes over the flywheel!!) Couple of questions, theres three like plates on the clutch side, is the one the block side of the flywheel the clutch, then theres the flywheel then is it the thrust plate?!!

Well am now going to have to use the 998 block from the Clubby on the gearbox from the 850! I'm sure I have read before that its possible to take a box from a A series engine and put it on a A+ block? I just have to use the correct idler? Is this right?

Sorry for taking this off topic, but I thought my original question has already been answered previously, so no harm done!!

Working from the engine block outwards you have the pressure plate first, then the clutch plate, then the flywheel and then the diaphragm spring. The thrust plate is the small plate in the end of the diaphragm spring unit that the thrust bearing acts against which you removed first when taking out the circular spring clip.

How on earth did you manage to scrap a block removing the crank pulley? I didn't know hammers were made that big! The pulley should come off really easily.

You can buy flywheel locking tools for about twelve notes if you know where from, that's what mine cost.

I know, I'm special!!! I was trying to take off the big ol' nut that keeps the pulley on, and decided a good way of keep the crank from spinning would be to place the breaker bar from my socket set through the cylinder (making sure I didn't sratch it!) and onto the crank, well it was working, but the nut was stuck fast, and it was part of the cylinder wall that gave way first!!

Spose I should of taken off the pulley before the flywheel!!

I know, I'm special!!!

If you've got the gearbox off you can lock the crank really easily with a big 'ol lump o wood. Sitck it between the crank and the crank case and that's it, locked up tight. Or if the gearbox is still on you can use a flywheel locker as described above or (my personal favourite for removing pulleys) an oil filter strap wrench around the pulley, the more you try to turn it the tighter it holds. They even make wrenches designed for use like this from lengths of vee belt.

You're not having a lot of luck with that are you, but hey, it's a learning curve...

tip, If you ever need to brace something use a piece of wood ( that breaks before the metal ! )

**edit**

Looks like me and Dan are on the been there done that bus again!

the auto block is different you'll have a problem with that as it does not have a hole for the oil filter ( as that's on the gearbox on an auto )... have a look at the front of the engine !

I may be after one of those from you! Although since I have a gearbox would you have just a block with crank and pistons?

Also, would you post if I paid?

They are short blocks ( so block crank, conrods and pistons ), the last on I just stripped is in pretty good nick but needs some new std mains, then bigends are ok as are the crank and pistons...

or... if the crank etc is ok in your 998 auto, you may just need the block !

Can post but will need to sort out a courier... and don't know how much it would cost
