My car went for its MOT today, along with the normal failures like bulbs, horn ect. I failed huge on welding, I paid £1350 for floor pans, cross memeber A posts, A panels, door steps, Inner sills, outer sills and other bits at jonspeed. The main reason why it failed is because alot of the welding was tacked not seam welded, So me and my mate got it to his garage on the ramps and scrapped of the alot of the seam sealer off. My friends dad owns a garage and has given me a second opion on it ( its naff ) were his words. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr : (

What should I do I have spent so much money on this project : (

first thing to do is go back to jonspeed and give them the chance to put the work right

if they don't want to know then take the next step

Basically, you've paid for a service that they have failed to provide.

You paid to have these panels replaced properly, not tack welded in place. Make sure you find the paper trail of your dealings with them in case you have to take this to a more serious level.

£1350 for that much work seems very cheap. Not surprising it's been bodged really.

I know how you feel about 'arguing' with companies that have done wrong, but the first thing to remember is 'not to go in all guns blazing'. Talk nicely to them, preferably in person, and explain that it's failed the MOT on the work they did. If poss, take someone with you who's more in the know in case they try 'male-cow-pooing' you.

Second thing is, don't pay another penny to them for any rework! They gave you a quote for what you rightfullly expected to be a proper quality job and you duly paid up. If anything, they should offer you compensation for the time you've wasted having to sort it all out.

If they do get snotty with you, then it's time to get tough and do a bit of name dropping. Drop TMF for starters (bad publicity), but don't start threatening legal action straight out. I'm not sure which govening body is responsible for this kind of situation but there must be one. Anyone know?

Hope you get it sorted quickly!

depends if you asked for the work to be done at an MOT standard level. if you didnt ask for it and they didnt say it would pass on an MOT then you will find it hard to fight your case. read any receipts you have carefully to see it they offer a gurantee or anything.

I will try and get it sorted civalised, but like you said if that does not work then I will spread the word on every forum and mini magazine, also a govering body of some sort.
Also another thing, I cannot point fingers but the steering wheel came of the other day. There was no nut  I could not undo that myself about 4 months ago.

Surely, if they are being paid to do work for a customer, then it should be carried out to a standard that is safe, if it wouldnt pass an MOT then it hasnt been carried out to this standard..?

Any work carried out should be "fit for purpose", if it wasn't (and if it hasn't passed an MOT then it isn't), then it should be rectified.

Talk to the Citizen's Advice Beareu, who I believe will basically tell you that you need to talk to Jonspeed, give them a chance to rectify the work, if that doesn't work you need to write them an formal letter giving them x amount of days to sort out the work, before you'll then proceed with court action (small claims court can recover these costs). Send if via Special Delivery). After this time has passed you'll then have to move on with a claim in the small claims court.

You don't need to seam weld everything, if it's a spot welded join originally it can be spotted/stitch welded back on, crossmember would be spot/stitch welded, if they are original sills they can be spot/stitch welded. If it's a cover sill it needs to be seam welded, part inner sills would be seam welded on the floor area but can spot/stiched along the doorstep any non original join would need seam welding like a patch repair.

Nobody in there right mind for instance would fully weld A panels on.

A few pictures would help, be careful before slagging anyone off for the moment, when you say tacked what do you mean, if it is literally tacks then that would not be acceptable

Cheers
David

I will get picture's tommorow. Im down the garage, I dont want to *woman of ill repute* anybody off, but paying that amount of money on welding and then the mot tester says its failed on body work it kind of gets to you abit.

If they disagree, what can I do

trading standards would take an interest, and they've just applied to be able to do MOT's, so might take the threat seriously.
