What year is the car, not the engine? I'm wondering if it was ballasted, obviously things have changed with the new starter and engine. If the starter motor is the same type as before it probably was ballasted - explains why the old coil worked.

the year of car is 82 for the mini

i cannot see the pink/white wire tho for the resistor wire?

i have a white wire tho that is part of loom

is the coil unipart GCL143 a ballast or non ballast coil?

And a lot less than 12 volts at your coil :P

an 82 car should have ballasted ignition.

Nipped in the Moss site 'because Minispares is all over the place on part numbers

Unipart coils are:

GCL110 Not ballasted up to 1982
GCL132 Ballasted 1982on
GCL143 Electronic

So I guess yours could be not ballasted - still doesn't explain the lowish voltage.

The coil for ballasted ignition has a resistance of around 1.5ohms. Your current one sounds right for electronic ignition. If it's the one that came with the engine and dizzy there's no reason to think it isn't.

Crikey! I go away for 5 minutes and my thread has been proper hijacked! :P

I'm away, hopefully I can sort my ignition out when I get home, thanks to your advice and good luck with your problems Marsy!

hmmm so what coil do you think i should use for my set-up then?

the engine came out of a metro 1990, so it was probably a ballast coil? tried it with that and it started first time, but tried it again 2 hours later and just turned over, didnt fire up.

tried the coil from old engine and fired up first time, this one could be a non ballasted coil?

so is GCL143 coil, you can use that regardless of whether you got a non ballast, or ballast set up?

sorry im probably making this sound like a mess, ive e-mailed the last owner what set-up, changes, and coil he done to it, so hopefully he can shed some light on it? fingers crossed.

thanks for your replies ethel

and sorry paulrockliffe for kijacking your thread, heee he

Evening!

Good news to report; it turns out the wire I'd connected to the terminal in my dash for the engine temperature gauge was actually the 12v feed to the coil :shifty:

So now thats wired up correctly he fired up straight away. I gave him a quick rev because I've forgotten what he sounds like and he absolutely shrieks like a good 'un, I'd forgotten how good the induction roar on twin HS2s is!
