I have one on my focus, it was bought for my by my parents as a present. Its a letter that my mum liked and then two numbers that are relevant to what it was bought for an my three intials.

I agree with parts of what has been said in that some people really don`t like them and it could be due to some people buying them as a sign of wealth or something as some do go for crazy money. To me though it just makes my car look individual.

Buy the most appropriate that you can afford as everytime you change your car it costs £85 to swap!!

The longer you keep it the more personal it gets.

Why not a personal plate? Everyone personalises their cars so why not put an appropriate plate on it?

If the purists are concerned about changing the cars identity and it not being the same as it left the factory etc - Do not worry the car usually gets issued with it's original plate when your transfer your number off the car.

It seems that its us Brits and the Americans that are fixated with private number plates. I stayed in France and was asked by the people I was staying with what was the point (when they saw a Brit car come past) I personally can see much better things to spend my money, and unless you buy one that has something in common with lots of people (taking away the 'personal' reason for buying it) then it's not going to be worth much if you want to sell. Also, in today's financial climate be prepared to be stuck with it if you want to sell. Personal plates are OK on the right car (show cars for example) but get something that you don't have to mess around with (like making 2x 1's a H with a black screw thingy) because that looks awful and just makes people think that the owner is trying too hard. SPL 45H will always be SPL 45H and not SPLASH in my opinion.

However, I wish I could put black/silver plates on my mini without worrying about the feds, as it's in keeping with the retro theme of my car, but I'm just gonna buy some yellow/white plates with riveted raised digits instead.

different story here in Germany...everytime the car gets sold it gets a new reg plate, and the do go very well...saw a mini of late with MI:NI 1275...mates got DA:MP 69!! Two first initials are the county...and the rest you can have for 10 euros and the price of the plate, in total 22euros!!

When i was back over UK i saw loads of people trying to make words out of numbers with black screws to make em look like something else...

anyways...heres mine!! 1972 my year.

The most expensive plate was for F1, which was owned by Essex County Council(£375k). It used to be displayed on Chelmsford's mayoral car.
I think you should keep the original plate, it is personal to the car not the driver!

I got my wife one for Christmas 2 years ago, her name: Kate Hyatt her plate K8 HYT... best i could do but it was only £250.

There's someone round here with a vectra, reg number something like V461NAS which always makes me double take and giggle but i think they just got it with the car and have no idea what it looks like.

Also know someone who got YE51CRY (yes i cry) and an old pal who had B10WME.

To me it's down to the person, if you are happy with it then who cares what everyone else thinks. My Audi is a 94 and came with A6 DSX (it's an A6 turbo estate, which fits, plus I kinda like it)

The mayor of Sunderland has OGR1 on his staff car, it shouldn't be on a Volvo! (He's a Hairy Biker in a cartoon in Bike Magazine)

The best one I know of, if it's still out there, a mate of mine had a 1.1 Fiesta with L91 NCH, and he wondered why he'd get wolf whistles and funny looks until we pointed out it looked like L 9 1nch. He parked in Hooters in Nottingham and someone offered him £800 for his registration alone. At least now he knew why people would say 'hello big boy' at college, lol.
