I've had quite a few dealings with insurance companies over the years..........

Rule 1

NEVER EVER EVER ACCEPT THE FIRST OFFER

This is the start of the haggling process, treat it as if you are buying the car!!

They've offered £850, I would now get some photo-copies of classified ads with pics of vastly inflated mini prices and counter that offer with a demand for £1750 inc excess and return of car.

Its a game, play it your advantage.

Example

My '67 GT got written off, first offer was £1500

Settled for £3000 inc return of car!!

I got the MG owners club involved, wrote to the chairman, played up like utter twot!!!

Bottom line, it worked!!

If you want any help PM me

not a bad start then Oli!!

As shifty says, get onto them and say you think the mini is worth more than that and supply some ads out the back of the most recent mini world or similar (i have a copy if you need it). They are obliged to give you 3 offers so might as well use them!!

Also find out whether they will class it as a Cat C or Cat D.

Cat D is prefferable - as no inspection is needed just a new MOT, Cat C means you will have to take it to Gillingham and have it inspected.

Keep us updated but is starting to look a bit better. :D

thanks for the help, both of you. i really cant be bothered just want it over with :teehee: but itll be a huge help to get a lot more for her, and to be honest, if im supposed to be able to buy a replacement mini of same spec, then i really should get more. so ill keep on pursuing.

i printed out some ads from various places for when the engineer came round to visit, so ive already got some stuff. ill find more and newer things and look through this months mini mag. ill get a game plan thought out this weekend and attack them soon.

is there any way i can try to get them to make it cat D in the deal kinda thing? or is it just something they would have already set in stone. either way, fingers crossed for D.

shifty im sure youll get a pm from me at some point. and ill keep this thread updated. and david, ill give you and russ a pm when i get to the stage of taking the engine out or if i need some help cutting the body away, so im sure that wont be long either.

thanks for all the help!

I don't think you can "make" them class it as a Cat D, it all comes down to the amount strutural damage noted by the engineer. But the worst case is that it would have to be inspected, (and without sounding big headed) Full Circle repairs are very good and would pass. Also inspections are not subject to the car having brand new parts - so as many 2nd hand parts as poss lol!

But you said to me that the engineer said it was only cosmetic damage so i would predict a Cat D, and they are allowing you to keep the car.

Keep me informed Oli, as I will help you anyway I can and hopefully get things moving for you soon.

ah yeh but only cause I only take pictures of her good bits  lol she's quite rusty in places, and it looks to me as if when she was sprayed purple, it was a 'bodge job' at home with a spray can! She needs one hell of a makeover :teehee: (she didn't hear that  :D ) lol

lol, thats all i did too. although to be honest she wasnt as rusty as i thought but the bottom of the a panels were completely gone! baby was white originally, got resprayed 1 or 2 owners ago. but that was a bad job as you can see if you look close up. there are lots of runs and thin patches, and bits here and there are still white :D shell be going in for a full respray when the shell is sorted. funnily enough the bottom of rear panel i had to respray due to welding work, used a can from halfrauds and it actually seems to have a better finish than the rest of the car. but the only reason she always looked so shiney was because id spend 2 hours every saturday washing, waxing, polishing, hoovering etc etc etc (3 hours on a show weekend ;))
