Hi everyone! I am new to the mini scene so please bear with me.

I have loved classic minis as far as I can remember and I finally bought a 1997 mini cooper but unfortunately, the engine blew up and is terminal. I am now looking to replace the engine and have found one that is much lower in mileage from another written off mini.

The plan is to restore the mini to a good standard and keep it for as long as possible.

What are the positives and negatives of a replacement engine? Does it affect the value of the car negatively or positively?

What documents do I need to obtain in relation to the replacement? Do I need to notify the DVLA and insurance company?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Much appreciated.

Can you upload the images of the replacement engine?

As for informing the DVLA and the insurance company, you will need an engineer's report (I'd suggest the AA or a mini specialist) on company headed paper.

what do you mean blown up???? IE rod through block most engines can be reworked for a fair price you can never trust a 2nd hand engine maybe just as bad...if I were you I would save up and get your engine rebuilt if its not thrown a rod......and at least you will have a brand new engine with the original NO:

A 2nd hand engine might always be as bad as your current one unless you really know the seller.
A mini typically doesn't really lose any value by changing an engine. Especially the later models.
(The later) mini's don't have a VIN code on the engine number, so it doesn't really matter.

Thank you all for your responses.

Sorry I had to repeat the post. I am new here and I was told I needed to post at least 5 times for my posts to be approved by the moderator.

The engine has a hole in it. Not sure about rod through block. The mini specialists is a trusted person and they would have told me if we could have rescued it. I don't have photos of the new engine yet but when I do, I'll upload them here.

The engine that blew up had done over 82K so isn't better to replace it with one that has done only around 20K?

My mini is from 1997 so it's pretty later but not sure if it's late enough.

Does having the engine replaced affect the value of the car?

Aslong as the engine is an MPI engine you won't need to adapt wiring. Having a replacement motor won't alter the value too much(if at all)

Would it not increase the price to have an engine with lower mileage? I'm not looking to sell it but it's always nice to know it's worth it.

It could, however if the current engine is the original matching number engine, consider rebuilding that to really boost value

and the :techsupport:s here can help you get back on the road quicker

Hi thanks for all your help.

I just got an update from my mechanic. Apparently the hole is in the gearbox and not the engine. Sorry.

Should I still replace the whole engine or if possible, just replace gearbox and try to fix recon the engine?

Only thing is, I could possibly get an engine with only 20K on it as opposed mine which has over 80K on it. The cost being similar what you guys do?
