Anyone put gasket sealer on there exhaust manifold gasket, as an extra seal, is there any reason why I shouldn’t ?

Hi I’ve been watching some vids on YouTube on smoke testing for leaks, anyone done this, I tried with a smoke match but these guys are putting the smoke in the engine any advice ??

If you search the forum you will find a number of ways of testing for leaks.

 

Have you blocked the purge valve hose and checked the IACV steps at that point yet?

Thank you which yes I did and no changes ? I’ve taken the hose that goes off the IACV elbow at the bottom and upto the throttle body and put my finger over the top bit and it runs great, doesn’t rev up but still shows no steps
I’m beginning to thing that maybe it’s in the brake servo itself as the brakes are rubbish!! And from researching this is a posssbility ?
I’m going to take it out of the equations next time I’m up there by blocking the pushfit bit in the manifold, any ideas what size it is to block it up ?

I would be very careful with the servo pipe and its manifold fitting. I am pretty sure neither is availbe new any longer.

I think you said whne you removed it the idle went up dramatically. This as expected and most likely indicates there is not a leak in that line, not 100% but pretty sure.

 

You need to eliminate possible leaks one at a time starting with the hoses, then the sensors, then mating surfaces.

Thank you I’ll have another play it’s difficult to say the least, I can hear a high pitched whooosh noise like a leak but just can’t put my finger on it

Hi chaps had another go today but no joy really, used propane gas all around it, had a very slight change and I mean slight near the inlet manifold on the right hand side, I’ve already tuck it off before to change out the gasket for a genuine rover mpi one, just looking back through my restoration pictures looks like it originally had one of those crappy double metal one similar to this on eBay, tempted to try one of these again what do you think 🤔

Not sure if it makes a difference but the actual exhaust does blow in a few places, my thinking was get it running and fix them, I assumed as there after all the sensors etc it wouldn’t make a difference ? Am I correct in thinking this or could this be an issue, I literally just thought about it while reading done threads and got he thinking 🤔

I really would love to be able to answer your question, but I don't know how a blowing exhaust affects the IACV valve, I imagine it doesn't.

 

Stick with the genuine MPI manifold gasket. From a reputable seller (minispares) and make sure it goes on the right way round.

 

You need a specialist with a T4, someone who knows how it works and how to sort it out. There are a few out there, but not near you.

With your throttle screw fully out, your stepper readings are going up, this is normal, the ECU is trying to get more air in, so it looks like it's working correctly, maybe not 100%, because it stays on "0" at other times.

 

Have you carefully checked all the wires going to the IACV valve ? remove the black tape at go back through the loom, test the continuity from the IACV plug to the pins on the plug to the ECU, when you get a connection, wiggle the wires near the plug to see if there are broken wires, it is a known problem.
