PMSL Iv been waitng for so long for a thread like this to come up on this forum.

How silly can someone be to have the cars wheel lock up then think, oh the shock must have failed, i know ill keep driving!!!

Firstly are you really at collage learning to be a mechanic?

Secondly if you are what on earth made you think the shock must have failed, how could this possibly lock the wheel up when the wheel is still in its normal position and not falling off?

This really has made me laugh so much, but at this same time you really should stop doing any work on yours or anyone else's cars as you clearly dont have any knowledge about anything to do with the mechanics of a motor vehicle.

Im sorry but there is NO excuse you may not care about yourself or your car, but at least consider others!! you could have killed some one, does that not even bother you in the silghtest?????

Its not like he drove with no brakes, he did at least have 3 fully working brakes.

i doubt he would have driven it if he had to use the hand brake to stop.

its nothing like as dangerous as driving with a bald tyres, and lets face it, there are an awfull lot of cars out there driving with bald tyres.

You clearly dont have much knowledge about the breaking system, so please stop before you make yourself look silly.

As the caliper only had one bolt holding it on for a while, the caliper could have spun round a bit this moving the pots away from the disk and then if the brake was pressen there would be no breaking effort! And looking at the state of the pictures posted it looks like it wouldnt have taken much for the caliper to have broken away thus having no braking atall. (not still having 3 wheels brake, NONE)

So how could that possibly be anywhere near as dangerous as driving with bald tyres? Atleast you have a mild amount of braking with bald tyres, not that im saying its a good idea to drive with bald tyres as thats just dangerous and illegal.

NOW AS SAID ABOVE PLEASE STOP WORKING ON YOURS OR ANYONE ELSES CARS AND TAKE IT TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

Do you drive yet? Any idea what having 3 working brakes means? Yep, one DOESN'T work, which means the car violently pulls to one side. Stop trying to dig out of the hole, its only making it worse. Same goes for you, SFM - trying to justify yourself is only going to make you look a bigger fool. Although I'm fairly confident my sage advice will fall on deaf ears.

You are right, but i've driven a car with 3 working brakes (not on the road), if you know it pulls to one side when you break, you automaticly counter act it. im not saying its safe, but its a damn site safer than it could have been.

you could kill someone as soon as you get into your car,

I think the point the other member was trying to make, was that yes there is a risk to nearly everything you do but some risks are greater than others.

The risk of you doing any damage by simply getting in your car and sitting there is very very minimal

The risk of you doing catastrophic damage if a wheel on your car has locked up randomly, and loud metal noises are coming from your car, is likely I'd say.

And becomes more likely the longer you drive it :withstupid:

You really didnt take on board the bit about stopping digging a deeper hole did you? :withstupid:

Again, you missed the point entirely Burnard. Allow me to elaborate, again. The following should go without saying, really :withstupid: but for your benefit here goes

There is a risk to almost everything you do. There's a risk to boiling the kettle, stepping onto a bus, bungee jumping. Some things are more risky than others.

FYI, "risk" is the chances of something (bad, in this context) happening in a given situation. I'm not a statistician so I don't know how to calculate degree of risk.

If you drive a car knowing, or thinking something bad has gone wrong with it, this is quite risky. If there has been loud noises coming from the wheel, the wheel has locked up, the brakes have failed - this is very risky.

However I can safely say that "getting in a car" is significantly less risky than driving a car in the above situation.

Maybe I used the word "risk" too many times, but I do quite like it, it's similar to "rusk" - I quite like those, too.

Maybe I should get to sleep.

Ooops, too many "maybe"'s :(

Boys please! Sean has been pummeled with the point all night, repeating it achieves little now. This thread was not reopened for it to get as bad as it was before. If it has to be closed again it won't get reopened again.

how many people on here are useing a laptop? that could kill you, easyer than you think.

dont make me tell you about my bleak out look on life.

Whaaaaaat?

Learn English young man, and when you have I'll show you the only way to die by Laptop. when I bash it off the side of your cranium! (Joke). :withstupid:

I've been driving for 17 years, I've never killed anyone in a car, but then I've never had a caliper fall off my car either. I have however been involved in several accidents, albeit only once was it my fault with minimal damage to the other car.

I've been working in I.T. for 12 years in a front line capacity, I have neither died nor suffered serious or minor injury through using a laptop! My laptop has crashed several times, but I have never been liable, that blame lies with Mr Microshaft.

This thread does indeed suck, it needs closure and/or preferably deletion.

I think there was at least 1 girl laying the boot in too Lisa :P

Just in the interest of addressing any misconceptions:

All your brakes share one hydraulic system, lose any part of it and your ability to stop will be severely compromised. Even with a tandem system the excessive pedal travel could have the pedal on the floor before you can generate much stopping power - not that you'd do that very quickly in a Mini with only rear brakes.

Rally drivers would be arrested for dangerous driving the same as anyone else if they took a defective car on to the public highway. Even when they limp home on special stages they have the benefit of pace notes so they can anticipate well in advance, and they can be reasonably confident they won't encounter any little old ladies who turn without signalling etc.

Even if you could limp home without killing yourself or others, why take a very real risk of causing more damage than the cost of using a recovery truck?
