My '88 standard 998 will do 85mph if I really push it (down a hill) - but cruises most comfortably at about 65mph
and would do it all day.

To original poster - if you are doing lots of motorway go for as late a car as you
can afford because the twenty odd year old 998 cars with carbs are not ideal for long trips up the M1.
Proper noise, high revs for long periods, dreadful acceleration from 65 to 75...
In an old Mini with a 998 you'll be looking at the back of the same lorry for a LONG time on a motorway.

Best wishes
Monty

Thanks! Well this one I'm looking at is a 1275, 97 Mayfair, so she should be a good little runner, and i Meant to ask are all minis made after 1996, MPI engines or was this option just available? Not are all minis made after MPISs! Doh.

And did he mention motorway? Could be the autobahn! lol :dontgetit:
Thanks

I'm about an inch away from buying a mini, and to be honest im not really fussed but my dad think its important so... Will a Mini happily cruise at 70 down the motorway, or will it hate me eternally for it and not do it any good, is it also a relatively easy option to fit a 5 speed gearbox.

Thanks

i have a spi and mine cruises at 85 and still has a little grunt for overtaking.

even the 1275 carb can sit at 80 no problem

not that I would because its over the speed limit and illegal honest :dontgetit:

My MPi will quite happily pootle along at 80 for miles on end and isn't too noisy, did take it up to an indicated 95 once but bottled out, I don't like making the engine scream.

For some odd reason my Mini seems to 'wander' quite a bit at speed, don't know why.

Thanks for the input (and sorry for sort of hijacking the thread lol)

Looks like i have a stupid set up with this 1275, when it was a 998, it would have had the 3.44 diff so motorway journeys were alright, 80mph was quieter than 70 when i had it on the test track.... (on the clocks)

I'll have a look at changing it as it sort of spoils the car i think, acceleration is spot on, keeps up with my mates 2.0l Volvo 360 up to about 60 then sort of trails off a bit.

i shouldn't bother with a 5sp, altho mine always seems like it needs another gear lol, as for that speed, a guy a few weeks ago said he kept doing 80mph every day, his mini slowly fell apart lol, its just not what they were built for

my cooper sits at 70mph quite happily. done well over 700 miles in a day (inverness to north devon to west sussex) and totalled over 2,200 miles in one week, and didnt miss a beat. was a tad noisy though not helped by the k&n filter and big exhaust. but even 2 up and full of camping gear it still had enough poke to overtake stuff.

I think my current 998 has quite a long legged FD 3.1/2? and eaisly does 70mph.. with plenty left to give, acceleration is pretty poor, but compensates on top end speed

My mini currently travels at about 3 yards per month as I wheel it about the garage. On the plus side I dont have a problem with engine noise

right, my mainstream cooper (carbed) will only do about 47mph at 3000rpm

but as its a bit ropey and i keep losing gears i ordered a refurbed box from guessworks which has just arrived and this has a 2.9 FD

should make crusing to work a lot nicer.

right now if i want to do 65-70mph i need to take the engine upto a painful 5000rpm ...

motor-ways are no fun! mine would happily cruise about 60ish but I tend to avoid motor-ways because i get bored

A & B Roads, thats what the mini was built for
