It's a sad day indeed when we can't let a legend of his calibre pass with dignity.

Some of us don't agree that he was a legend, sorry!

I can't understand the mass mourning. I couldn't understand the reaction to Diana's death either.

I saw a headline yesterday "The World Mourns" - actually, no it doesn't. Some of us are untouched by the death of a pop singer.

A legend in terms of talent. Personally, I do consider him to be among the stranger members of the species....but then that was bound to happen with his upbringing. *Shrugs* He was a very eccentric character.

I'm not mourning. I didn't mourn Diana either. I'm just saying the sick jokes are unnecessary.
You wouldn't crack jokes like that at a normal funeral, so why just because it's Michael Jackson that's died, do we have to be disrespectful?

If nothing else, even if you can't stand him and would have shot him on site, let him rest in peace.

Jokes (not that I have cracked any recently) are a way of dealing with things that happen in life. If you are offended by them, then that is unfortunate for you. Fortunately, you are permitted to speak ill of the dead, contrary to popular belief!!

Death is a part of life, and luckily, for those who are left behind, we get the chance to carry on & the chance to remember those who have gone in whatever way we deem appropriate.

It sickens me to be told by a celebrity-obsessed media whose passing I should be mourning. This was a man who had no effect on me (apart from some rubbish dancing at wedding receptions) and a huge number of the people in this world. The death of this man has distracted the media completely from all the truly important things that may be happening in the different parts of the globe.

It is this obsession with celebrity that I am mourning, not the insignificant passing of one of the 6 billion individuals on this planet's surface. Get things in perspective, people.

That is a fair point, but then again he did have an effect on a huge number of other people in the world. There will be many people who have been influenced by Michael Jackson and will be very sad about his death - whilst you and many others may not be among them, it does negate the fact that they exist.

'Legend' is a term that is bounded about far too often these days, in many different ways. However, in the field of pop music, there are very few people in its history that have been more successful and influential than Michael Jackson - and that transcends just pop and goes for many other genres of music too.

Is music that important in the world that it deserves any recognition and respect? I guess that is another question for another day. However whilst many of the people that mourned Diana hardly knew anything of her from day to day (barring tabloid headlines), the people that mourn, or are saddened by, the death of Michael Jackson would have had his music in their lives constantly.

It may sound cheesy but many people were inspired by him, and felt uplifted by him and his music, and it is perfectly natural for them to be deeply saddened by the loss of someone whom they may have felt was (even a small) part of their lives for all of their lives. When things overstep the mark is when people feel compelled to join in 'mass grief' much like when Diana died - to me it is understandable that those that liked MJ will be sad, and those that didn't shouldn't feel they have to be.

You first.
I had no idea that people weren't allowed their own opinions anymore & instead had to believe what others told them to. :tumble:
