Its too lean for your setup, AAU is a good starting point, then have a RR session.

as far as i remember ADE is standard for hif38 carbs fitted on 1275 engines.

Standard needle for 998 is AAC. ADE belongs to 1275 specs.

How did they realise that has been ported? They've stripped down cylinder head? Its odd because its also got a ported head (professionally ported inlet and knife edged runners)

When the carb and inlet manifold was taken off to fit the new exhaust (I had the 1 piece inlet and ehxuast manifold) you could see that the inlet was smooth and ported and if you put your fingers inside, instead of having quite blunt runners, they were worked to a much finer end for better gas flow.
What colour are the OEM 998 engines? mine is yellow, both block and head, neither seem like they have been apart. I don't know what the normal colour they were sprayed in the factory?

99H791PZ 541987
and the only numbers I can see of the actual cylnder head: 14MI
Am I to assume that the 1987 at the end of that number is the year of the engine? if so, the engine was built 5 years into the future when it was put into my car when it was built in 1982 lol

Enter AAM , AAU , AAA , ADE , AAC into there you will see the differences.
ADE is actually a weaker needle in a 998 then an AAC which is a standard 998 needle
I would try either AAA or AAM needle, very similar profiles.

It first started when I had a stage one added. The stage 1 kit I got came from Minisport and came with an AAU needle. It wasnt running right and I had it rolling roaded and they changed the needle for an AAA, which made it run perfectly. I then had a new carb and never changed the needle (my AAA had got bent in the old carb), but the Mini was running really rough again, so I bought another AAA needle and that did the trick.

Id reccomend like quite a few people on here, get an AAA needle and go from there

Ooo yeah, my mini is a 998 too, pretty much standard but with a stage 1.

Just tapped a few needles in (not literally lol) and it seems that the AAV needle minisports suggest in their stage 1 kit is only slightly richer than the current, the AAA or AAM needles are simular but much richer and it seems that the AAU needle that mini spares recomends makes up the middle ground

Hi, Ive had a few problems with my carb needle in the past (along with everything else!)
There was an AEM needle in the new carb (it was a hif38 for a suzuki SJ) and it was running horribly. Even though I had all the timing done it didnt work, but the timing had been set up perfectly for the carb, but not the needle. A straight swap for the AAA sorted the problem out straight away.
Id reccomend like quite a few people on here, get an AAA needle and go from there

Awesome, I will go with an AAA needle then

Yellow its a factory colour for the later Austin/Rover 998cc engines. 1275 were red.
