Just got back in, firstly how do you reset the mixture? which screw is it?

Secondly, I think I have kinda sorted it, I don't know why this has made such a HUGE difference, but I have moved the fuel hose slightly, just taken it out again and its got a nice big chunk of power back, its running quite smooth though the rev range, slightly lump/rich on idle though, but at least it doesn't stall lol

Mine is still running on the OEM mechanical fuel pump, which is iccle lol might get an electric one in soon, before hand the fuel filter wasn't filling that much with fuel, now its filled a bit more, so I guess when on heavy load (ie that hill) it used all the fuel in the float bowl and stutter not because it was rich, but because it was running on fumes lol

I think I need to tweek it a bit to get the idle less lumpy but THANK EVERYONE SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME :shifty:

at least now I can get the car to a rolling road at some point:)

Where should the fuel lines be running? my mate moved them last time as he told me about how they always seem to run right next to the ehxuast manifold, get hot, rupture and cause a fire.

Maybe the fuel pipe was kinked, moving it as straightened it out ??

The mechanical fuel pump is well upto the job for a 998, no need to mess with that

Think you said yours was a HS4 carb, mixture screw (nut) is underneath

if looking from above, turn it clockwise to richen , anticlockwise to weaken.

You really need a CO meter or colourtune sparkplug to do it right though. Probably a job for the rolling road if you don't have the gear.

Ah ok, yeah I think I might just leave it as is considering its actually running at the moment lol I will get it sorted at some point, my mate moved the fuel line from where it was originally, so I guess its moved slightly from where it was left, perhaps causing an air lock or restriction?

Yeah well lol :) its a mini, it needs to be fettled lol  I know when the car was setup last time, my mate richened the mix slightly as it was running very lean on the colourtune, meaning now that this is a richer needle its now set too rich (but spot on for the older leaner needle)

Ok, just got back in from tweeking it a bit, I have also managed to fit my tacho, so now I know what RPM its kinda at:

With AAA needle + no change in screw adjustment = lumpy idle at about 500-600 + black plugs and exhaust
With AAA needle + tweek = idling holding at 1000ish rpm, no steering wheel judder on idle

There was a change in engine note, I guess that now its slightly leaner its now not choking on large lumps of fuel coming in lol Just took it out for a drive, it drives well, no flat spots which is good

I had to turn the nut about 1 or 1 1/2 turns anticlockwise to get an engine note change, I think tomorrow I will clean the plugs and run over to halfords to get a colourtune - how good are they?

Set idle when engine smooths out, should be at about 900rpm.

In my opinion colortune is good, once you find out the correct needle, borrow a gas tester for the ultimate mixture setting (should be beetween 2,5% and 3% CO on tickover)

Before adjusting mixture, warm up engine, a short drive would be fine, then rev engine at about 2500rmp for 30 seconds before starting to work on carbs settings.

Did this work?? I have exactly the same problem but mine is random, it sounds like the car is dropping onto 2/3 cylinders, but if you pull the choke out it picks up. Makes me pretty sure it's not electrical/ignition related :D

I was running the wrong needle, was running an ADE instead of an AAU, AAV or AAA, I changed the needle over and its running as it should :D make sure your electrical ignition is all ok though, and also check the tappets!

Thanks for that, they were on my list anyway, we'll see how it goes, just annoying as it's not a constant problem! ;)

Same with mine until I cleaned the carb out ;)
